Korea and Her Neighbours by Isabella L. Bird (1831 - 1904).

This project is now complete. All files can be downloaded from the catalog page:
https://librivox.org/korea-and-her-neighbors-by-isabella-l-bird/

isabella travels to Korea and China this time! ( Availle)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/koreaherneighbor00bird_0/mode/1up
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

We have a preface! Actually, it's two, but it's really more of a preface and acknowledgements. :D

Two more chapters are up!

There's a lot of numbers in here, I hope it'll get better and she returns to the style of her letters...

section 2 - repeat 20:17, honest and helpful man else OK and more interesting.
I've been watching a few more Netflix while stuck at home and really enjoyed a Japanese one about a boy and a child murderer because of the insight into family and school it showed, so decided I'd try another crime one - which puzzled me because the actors didn't seem Japanese or Chinese to me until I saw them enter a Korean police station. I hadn't really realised that I would be able to tell them apart. (the films are dubbed and subtitled of course

I've uploaded a few more sections for you, in case you need to take your mind off things.

I don't recommend listening to section 4/chapter III before going to bed though. One would think that a description of the king leaving his palace with all sorts of pomp and people would be rather interesting. It isn't... :?

She also doesn't like Seoul much. Can't blame her. 21st century Seoul is pretty dreadful too.

And another chapter is up. :D

I thought I might be able to finish this by the end of the year, but it seems this will take more energy than I am able to muster at the moment...

I've started recording here again and have uploaded two new sections.

Section 9 will be up in a few days, it's a long one to edit...

Well, since it just started to rain heavily, there's no way I can record, so: more editing!

All sections up to 11 are finished and uploaded. Somewhere at 9 or 10 I said "dollars" instead of "pence/shillings" if you catch that, could you please let me know, I couldn't find it anymore.
Cheers, Ava.

Didn't read this before I started but as I seemed to have missed the rapids chapter, I'll do it later but I did hear dollars and was surprised so it's not in the rapids chapter.
It's really interesting, she is a good writer and a very good describer

Thanks Anne - that was quite a marathon!

I think I found the dollars - it's in section 10 "Marriage Customs" around 8:27. I'll fix it as soon as it stops raining. I hope this was the only occasion of wrong currency, but I'm not sure anymore. Did you hear it more than once so far?

No, only once - I didn't think of it being a mistake - I was just surprised that she had used it. All sections finished are Ok
