The Garden of Kama by Laurence Hope (1865 - 1904).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/the-garden-of-kama-by-laurence-hope/

Laurence Hope was the nom de plume of Adela Florence Nicolson, a British poet who wrote verses inspired by India, where she lived. This collection, her first, was originally published in 1901. (Newgatenovelist)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/gardenofkamaothe00hopeuoft
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Pam (pnagami) has very kindly consented to DPL this book.

A note for a prospective MC - I've left the full disclaimer for the first and final sections but will use the shorter poetry intro/outro for everything else.

I've just bought a second-hand copy of this book, and am slowly working my way through it. There are some lovely poems there; many sad, but watch out for the strange ones! .... Story by Lalla-Ji, the Priest is one that I'd feel uncomfortable suggesting for the weekly or fortnightly collections.

Enjoy yourselves.

Thank you so much for the well wishes, Peter! You're right, Hope's poetry varies quite a bit. When she's on top form she's very good (evidently Thomas Hardy liked her), but some of them haven't aged terribly well. I hope she does become better known than she currently is.
