The Rainbow by D. H. Lawrence (1885 - 1930).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-rainbow-version-3-by-d-h-lawrence/
The Rainbow is the story of three generations of the Brangwen family, a sexual and religious collection of incidents that eventually shows an individual consciousness's inertia to outgrow the commonplace and embrace the reality that lies beyond it. Throughout the novel, including its setting, the characters are being isolated because of their deviation from a conformist English society in a changing, steadily industrializing world.
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/28948
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

This is set up. Welcome to the world of BC'ing!

Detailed Instructions for accessing the Magic Window can be found in the document linked here:

At some point before cataloging, we'll need a PD summary/intro. (Wikipedia isn't PD, so we try to avoid using them as much as we can.) No rush on that.

I never read any of his books. May I dpl? At the end I promice to write a proper summary.
Love gothic novels? Try Children Of The Abbey. Like surprising mysteries? Try The Amathist Cross. Looking for an easy read? Try Harriet's Choice.

Hi!
I've edited the magic window and changed the summary (I wrote it myself). Um the chapters are kind of long so I have tentatively divided them into sections of 3500-4000 words. Since this was a gutenberg book, I can't really post links of the divided chapters so is it okay if I leave it to the readers' discretion or should I convert it all into google docs?

Thanks

Hey Shreya:

I was about to ask that I record Chapter 1 -Part 1 when I noticed that the text at the beginning and end of each recording may need some tweaking.
  • At the beginning, you may want to consider "Section X of..." rather than "Chapter X of..." perhaps?
  • For the third line of the preamble before the recording, you may want to consider something along the lines of: "The Rainbow by D.H. Lawrence. [Section Title]" since that'll take care of the chapter and its parts.
  • As for the first line of the text at the end of the recording, you may simply want to keep it as: "End of Section X" where X is the section number.
  • As for how much will be accommodated in each section, you may have to specify what line to what line will you want them to read as part of that section.
    • For example, for Section 30: Chapter 11 - Part 1, in the notes section for that section in the MW, you may have to mention" 'Read from "As Ursula passed..." to "..meekly away"' And then, mention the number of words in brackets.
Of course, this is on the basis of what I've observed in book projects here. Do take a look see at some - perhaps that'll help you make a decision about how to go about it?

Always,
Garfield

Hi
Thanks for the help, I'm, doing this for the first time so it was really nice of you to take out the time and point out the discrepancies. I'll work on them and let you know when I'm done since you're interested in recording.

Thank you so very much

I second all of what Garfield said. :)

When I BC a book from Gutenberg, I usually don't provide links to the individual sections. I suppose you could still provide a link to the individual chapter, and from there the reader would have to find the starting and ending places by searching for them. :)

Definitely provide starting and ending phrases. The less you have to make the reader do the work (divide up the chapter themselves), the more chance you'll get readers. :) You don't have to convert everything into Google Docs unless you want to make it VERY easy for the reader.

Oh wonderful, Shreya! You're doing a great job already! :-D

Yes I sure would like to: Section 1 [Chapter 1 - Part 1] and Section 2 [Chapter 1 - Part 2]. :-D

Just do take a look at the last line of the text at the beginning of the recording: You may want to change it to: "The Rainbow by D. H. Lawrence. [Chapter X - Part Y]" so that the reader/listener knows what part of the same chapter is he/she listening to.

Do you think that makes sense? If it doesn't, don't change it. I leave that to you.

Yay thank you so much for being the first to claim!!! I've assigned the sections to you and also added the part in the pre recording lines. Thanks for keeping an eye open for my mistakes.

Is it okay if the same reader doesn't necessarily record all sections of a single chapter? If so, I'd like to sign up for section 37. I'm just a bit intimidated by the thought of claiming all seven sections of that chapter at once!
For the time being, I'll need a little more time than usual to PL sections that come in on weekdays. Thanks for your patience.
