The Epistle to Diognetus

An early Christian letter/sermon.

Taking a break from my other projects because I had to move to an echoing room and can't continue on them until I get it sorted out.

From Wikipedia: The Epistle of Mathetes to Diognetus is an example of Christian apologetics, writings defending Christianity against the charges of its critics. The Greek writer and recipient are not otherwise known. Estimates of dating based on the language and other textual evidence have ranged from AD 130 (which would make it one of the earliest examples of apologetic literature), to the late 2nd century, with the latter often preferred in modern scholarship.

Nothing is known either about its recipient, Diognetus. It is likely that he was the tutor of the same name to the emperor Marcus Aurelius. It is entirely possible, without verification of the author, that we have a fictitious character, since the name "Diognetus," means "God-born" in Greek .

The Short Nonfiction Collection's dedicated proof listener, Craig, is taking a few days off, so I PL'd this for you. You read very well! If one were go by what LibriVox defines as "standard proof listening," your selection would need no editing. However, given the overall high quality of your reading, I'm thinking the following are edits that you will probably want to make, particularly at 14:19, where your accidental substitution of the word "he" for "we" brings us back to questions of free will vs. determinism -- I say this because I just finished PLing William James' "The Dilemma of Determinism," selection #18 in the Magic Window.

8:55, page 361, section VI, No.2 Text reads: "The soul is spread through all members of the body, and Christians throughout the cities of the world." You said "and Christians dwell throughout the cities of the world."

12:35, page 367, Section VII. No. 9. Text reads "These things do not seem to be the works of man; these things are a miracle of God..." You left out "These things do not seem to be the works of man"

14:19, page 369, section IX, No. 1. Text reads "...he suffered us up to the former time to be borne along by unruly impulses as we willed, carried away by pleasures and lust." You said "as he willed"

20:19, page 377, section XI, No.7. Text reads "...you will understand what the word says through the agents of his choice, when he will." You said "whom he will."

There are just a few corrections that need to be made in this reading. In the first set, you left out #62 entirely.

In the second set, you confused the words "faith" and "truth" a few times. You said "faith" where the text said "truth" in numbers 14, 28, and 38. (26:31, 29.25.50, 32.00.5. In #43, the opposite occurred. You said "truth" where the text said "faith." (33.13).

One procedural comment from me as book coordinator: since you're new to the SNF collection, I will mention for future reference, that the SNF has a stated limit of 2 selections per person per volume. [If the recording time for a selection is longer than 74 minutes and must, therefore, be divided into 2 parts, you'll sometimes see what looks like 3 selections from the same person]. However, since this is your first time joining SNF, I'm accepting your 3rd submission.

Thanks Sue, that was very detailed PL! Makes it easy to fix.
Missing 62 was a case of homeoteleuton from 61 (https://sites.ualberta.ca/~sreimer/ms-course/course/scbl-err.htm - I'm sure this is more applicable to LV and PLing than to anything else these days!)

They should all be fixed under the same filename. Had to learn how to use analyse spectrum and the filter curve EQ in Audacity to make my voice sound sufficiently similar!

I didn't know that the collection was curated - thought it was more a catch-all for short things that don't fit in to a project. You're very welcome to drop one of them and I can resubmit it in the future!

Regarding Tetzel, I have been able to determine that you have now included #62--but the inclusion of #62 throws off the timings for the transpositions of "faith" and "truth," and it's hard for me to pick them out using the listen link in the MW.

Regarding Tetzel #'s 61-62, when I was doing the original PL, I noticed that, at the end of #61, you had committed a "metathesis" (i.e. reversal of letters, words, phrases). The text here reads "just as if truly confessed and penitent" but you read "just as if truly penitent and confessed." At the time, I stopped and considered whether the difference, subtle as it was in meaning, was something I needed to point out, and decided to let it go...
