If I knew What Poets Know by James Whitcomb Riley (1849 - 1916).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/if-i-knew-what-poets-know-by-james-whitcomb-riley/
Riley's chief legacy was his influence in fostering the creation of a Midwestern cultural identity and his contributions to the Golden Age of Indiana Literature. With other writers of his era, he helped create a caricature of Midwesterners and formed a literary community that produced works rivaling the established eastern literati. There are many memorials dedicated to Riley, including the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children. (Wikipedia)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This week's poem can be found here.

Set your recording software to:
Channels: 1 (Mono)
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44100 kHz

Have questions on "how"?
Check LV's Recording Notes thread before recording. If this is your first recording, you'll also find this Newbie Guide to Recording useful.
Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
If I knew What Poets Know by James Whitcomb Riley, read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal URL.]
Then read the poem:
If I knew what poets know,
Would I write a rhyme
Of the buds that never blow
In the summer-time?
Would I sing of golden seeds
Springing up in ironweeds?
And of rain-drops turned to snow,
If I knew what poets know?

Did I know what poets do,
Would I sing a song
Sadder than the pigeon's coo
When the days are long?
Where I found a heart in pain,
I would make it glad again;
And the false should be the true,
Did I know what poets do.

If I knew what poets know,
I would find a theme
Sweeter than the placid flow
Of the fairest dream:
I would sing of love that lives
On the errors it forgives;
And the world would better grow
If I knew what poets know.

At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.

Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.
Save your recording as an mp3 file using the following filename and ID3 tag format:
File name - all in lowercase: poetsknow_riley_your initials in lowercase_128kb.mp3
(e.g. poetsknow_riley_klh_128kb.mp3 )

ID3 tags (Version 2.30): ID Tags are completed during Cataloging

*Readers, please check back in a day or so for any feedback regarding your reading.

*Best to copy the filename provided above into the LV Uploader, inserting your initials of course.

Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
  • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader

Thank you Doug, there are a couple of ms-reads you may wish to correct...
- at 0:15 is read "And of the rain-drops turned to snow," text reads "And of rain-drops turned to snow,"
- at 0:36 is read "And the false should be true,"text reads "And the false should be the true,"
- at 0:57 is read "And the world would be better grow", text reads "And the world would better grow"

Thanks.

Ack! Here is the re-uploaded file with corrections. We leave the naming convention as-is for redos right?

Dunno if it matters, but you've got the length of mine wrong in the MW - see my earlier amendment :-)
