Andromache by Jean Racine (1639 - 1699). Translated by Robert Bruce Boswell (1864 - 1933)

In this tragedy, which made its appearance in 1667, there is a more intricate plot than is usual in Racine's plays, and it offers a greater variety of character and motive. Love, jealousy, friendship, conjugal fidelity, maternal tenderness, anger, and despair are all portrayed with skillful touches; and if the language is that of the French Court of the seventeenth century, the natural emotions of the human heart, the same in all ages, show themselves plainly under the mask of conventional mannerism ( The Translator)
  • This play is complete. Audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/andromache-by-jean-racine/

The next Racine play, dealing with the fallout of the Trojan War. I'm afraid it is more tragedy: I guess they all are.

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/dramaticworksje01boswgoog/page/n143/mode/2up
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

oh I'm late for the show...well getting this on my DPL list, and I am looking forward to playing Andromache (which needs to be written with 'ch' instead of 'qu' ;) - already starting to be picky, I know  ), another great Racine heroine. :9:

Thanks for running those, Todd !

Thank you for joining and welcome to the project. I will hold the part a couple weeks while you get the One Minute Test done - this is not an audition but a way to make sure you have your equipment set up properly.

This seems to be your first drama recording, so here are a few special rules I stole from our DPL which differ from the other LV projects:

1) you don't have to read an intro or outro disclaimer, this will be done by the narrator. Instead, record your voice credit at the beginning of the file, which would be something like: "Boy, read by [your reader name]" using the words in the MW

2) then browse through the text and record all the lines you have to speak. It may not be necessary to read the whole play, especially here for this small role, but it would be good to read a bit around your lines, see what the others are saying, so you can better "react" to them. Just be as expressive (according to the character) as you can in your role. ;)

3) if there are pointers in the text qualifying your voice, like [laughs] or [whines], an added bonus would be that you act those out in your reading, if possible, to make it all more interesting

4) and most importantly: please leave enough space between each of your speeches, preferably 3-5 seconds. Even when you have the stage directions in the middle of your speech (for example: [sits down]), also leave 5 seconds of pause there, because our editor (me) later on has to copy all your parts and paste them into his master file and it's helpful if he (I) has enough space to fiddle with

That should be all, now have fun acting out!

Any questions, just post them here.

Thanks, Todd

Thank you, and welcome. You've taken your One Minute Test and got everything set up, so you are good to go.

You will see some useful drama project instructions just up a few postings. Any questions? Just post them in here and we'll answer them. Enjoy.

Thanks, Todd
