Hi Kazbek and Kitty,

The manuscript was written in 1470, but only discovered in 1968.

The reading is from the original text in historical Maltese, which no longer exists.

The modern Maltese and Arabic texts are there for comparison.

I'll wait to hear back from admins before looking at the manuscript, but I already couldn't resist this little linguistic game. The Arabic text makes for a very helpful bridge to the original text. In fact, without knowing Maltese or even Maghrebi Arabic, I could already see that the English translation of the middle portion is very loose. To me, it (the first variant of the semi-repeated couplet) reads more like the following:

It (she) fell, my edifice, that I've been building for a (long) time;
It was not the master builder's fault, but the loose potter's clay was cleft,
Where I had hoped to find mountain rock, was loose potter's clay.
It (she) fell, my edifice.

I may have been led astray by some "faux amis". And this strikes me as a very memorable line: liradi ’al col xibir sura.

Anyway, thanks, Falcon, for indulging my inner linguist.

I am highly trusting on your native speaker proficiency to get it right, because some words were quite tricky to decipher. But if in the end it makes all sense, then I think we can accept it.

Michael, maybe you want to have another listen as well, just to be on the safe side. But to me it sounds PL ok. Anyway, with any language medieval or antique, there is some leeway on pronunciation and interpretation. After all, there are no native speakers anymore that would complain

You only started out with the long disclaimer, you could have used the shortened disclaimer because it was such a short poem. But it's ok, no need to to reupload for this time.

I guess I'll put the language as simply "Maltese" (not differentiating for medieaval). You say it in your intro, and we put it in the MW, that should be precise enough. I think this officially our first section in Maltese.

Now could you please just give us a couple of keywords to describe the poem ? We want to include this for every recording in this project.

and I love the moral of the fable too. It was easy for me to understand it all, you are reading slow enough for me to follow along with the text.

I have a few notes for your consideration though. Nothing difficult, no need to re-record it all again ! Just Spot correct those small bits that I will note down here:

You can say it all in Spanish of course, that's fine.
