This project is now complete! All files can be found at https://librivox.org/on-benefits-by-lucius-annaeus-seneca/

On Benefits (De Beneficiis) by Lucius Annaeus Seneca (4 BCE - 65). Translated by Aubrey Stewart (1844 - 1918)

De Beneficiis (English: On Benefits) is one of the moral essays composed by Seneca, Roman author of the 1st century CE. It deals with Stoic ethics, mainly in regards to political leadership, concerning the award and reception of gifts and favours within society. While the title is traditionally translated as "On Benefits", other possible translations are "On gifts and services"; "On the Award and Reception of Favors" and "On kind deeds". (Summary by Leni)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/3794
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hello, and welcome to LV!

Before I can assign you a section, I need to know under what name/pseudonym you would like to appear in the catalog.

Also, please read the Guide to Newbies (https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Newbie_Guide_to_Recording) and please try the one-minute test, so you make sure your technical specs are ok. Thanks again!

Holy wall of text batman!

I'll take Book 3 (Sections 7, 8 & 9) if I may
Diana V.

Constructive criticism is always welcome. Do I need to slow down? How's my enunciation? Did I stumble, or pause too long? Please let me know!

Leni -

Would you like the chapter numbers read as I come to them or omitted?

Also - in book V, chapter 25, there are what appear to be citations ( [Il. i. 39 sqq.] and [Hes. Op. 291.] ). Would you like those read in some fashion or omitted?

Hey, Fritz. Thanks for asking. I did think about omitting or not the numbers, but I think we should read them, because it helps people get a sense of where they are in the book. As to the citations... :hmm: they are not in the original of course, and I am not sure all readers would know how to read them. I think we can leave that to each reader's discretion.

Thanks!

Hello Leni!

Great project! I'm familiar with Seneca's work since I'm writing a book about the Emperor Nero. I'd like to volunteer for Section 1: Book I, chap. 1 - 5.

I just submitted my one minute test and am waiting for feedback.

I've downloaded Audacity and Checker and am working off of a MacBook Pro with Bose 700 headphones/microphone. I've properly set-up my preferences in Audacity to comply with Librivox recommendations.

This is my first volunteer chapter and am anxious to do a really good job. Let me know if you'd like for me to read.

Thank you!
