Ode To Duty by William Wordsworth (1770 - 1850).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/ode-to-duty-by-william-wordsworth/
“Ode to Duty” is an appeal to the principle of morality for guidance and support. This Fortnightly Poem is taken from The Poetical Works of William Wordsworth — Volume 3 (of 8) by William Wordsworth ( Wikipedia)
Each fortnight a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This Fortnightly Poem has been suggested by Gyan :clap:
This fortnight's poem can be found here.

Set your recording software to:
Channels: 1 (Mono)
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44100 kHz

Have questions on "how"?
Check LV's Recording Notes thread before recording. If this is your first recording, you'll also find this Newbie Guide to Recording useful.
Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
Ode To Duty by William Wordsworth, read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal URL.]
Then read the poem:
Stern Daughter of the Voice of God!
O Duty! if that name thou love
Who art a light to guide, a rod
To check the erring, and reprove;
Thou, who art victory and law
When empty terrors overawe;
From vain temptations dost set free;
And calm'st the weary strife of frail humanity!

There are who ask not if thine eye
Be on them; who, in love and truth,
Where no misgiving is, rely
Upon the genial sense of youth:
Glad Hearts! without reproach or blot;
Who do thy work, and know it not:
Oh, if through confidence misplaced
They fail, thy saving arms, dread Power! around them cast.

Serene will be our days and bright,
And happy will our nature be,
When love is an unerring light,
And joy its own security.
And they a blissful course may hold
Even now, who, not unwisely bold,
Live in the spirit of this creed;
Yet seek thy firm support, according to their need.

I, loving freedom, and untried;
No sport of every random gust,
Yet being to myself a guide,
Too blindly have reposed my trust:
And oft, when in my heart was heard
Thy timely mandate, I deferred
The task, in smoother walks to stray;
But thee I now would serve more strictly, if I may.

Through no disturbance of my soul,
Or strong compunction in me wrought,
I supplicate for thy control;
But in the quietness of thought:
Me this unchartered freedom tires;
I feel the weight of chance-desires:
My hopes no more must change their name,
I long for a repose that ever is the same.

Stern Lawgiver! yet thou dost wear
The Godhead's most benignant grace;
Nor know we any thing so fair
As is the smile upon thy face:
Flowers laugh before thee on their beds
And fragrance in thy footing treads;
Thou dost preserve the stars from wrong;
And the most ancient heavens, through Thee, are fresh and strong.

To humbler functions, awful Power!
I call thee: I myself commend
Unto thy guidance from this hour;
Oh, let my weakness have an end!
Give unto me, made lowly wise,
The spirit of self-sacrifice;
The confidence of reason give;
And in the light of truth thy Bondman let me live!

At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:

Thank you Chad, could you check - at 1:41 I hear "Me this unchartered freedom cries" the text reads "Me this unchartered freedom tires;"

*Please post any edits in the project thread, otherwise there is no record of their being done. :)

Hello! This is my first time contributing, so I hope I haven't done anything wrong. Apologies if I have! Here is the link to my recording: https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/odetoduty_wordsworth_em_128kb.mp3

* MC has renamed the file, there is already an LH initial in this week's collection. :wink:

Welcome to Librivox Elisha :D I've changed the initials in your filename, they were the same as a previous submission. The uploader renames the first file so it would not be available.

Good first reading, however the bitrate is 123 kbps (variable) and we need 128 kbps (constant). This is set when you save/export the file.
There is a hint of breath noise on some words with the th, d, t, p sounds, you can move the mic away from your mouth a bit to correct this. :wink:

*Please let me know under what name would you like to appear in the LV catalog and if you have one, we can put your personal URL link on your catalog page too.
You can view your brand new LV Catalog page by clicking your forum name in the Magic Window.
