The Double: A Petersburg Poem by Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821 - 1881). Translated by Constance Garnett (1861 - 1946)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-double-a-petersburg-poem-by-fyodor-dostoyevsky-2/
In this classic novella, the life of a drab office clerk named Golyadkin begins to be haunted by his "doppelgänger," a man identical to him possessing all the charm and charisma Golyadkin lacks. This double shows up over and over again, succeeding in the things Golyadkin has failed to do throughout his life. As this double infiltrates himself more and more into Golyadkin's life, the reader is left wondering who he is and what his purposes might be. ( Magda Wilde)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/eternalhusbandot00dost_2/page/138/mode/2up
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Two comments:

(1) There's a version of this already in the catalog. You are certainly still welcome to record it, but some readers prefer to not record something that has been done already, so I thought I'd mention it.

(2) I'm leery of this text source. It does not say anything about the edition used to make the html. We did find a 1923 edition (a scan of the text) here: https://archive.org/details/eternalhusbandot00dost_2/page/138/mode/2up Would you be willing to record from that text instead?

I'm aware there's a copy in the catalog- I'd still love to do this book. Thanks so much for this text source! Exactly what I was looking for. How could I insert it into the Text Source opening instead of the other source?

This is set up.

I left the file names the way the generator made them. Another option would be simply double_##_dostoyevsky_128kb (the first part being shortened). Your choice.

As you're the soloist, you're in charge of updating the Magic Window.

Detailed Instructions for accessing the Magic Window can be found in the document linked here: Instructions for Soloists

Video showing how to use the Magic Window (read the above document first - it has the information on how to log in for the first time, which this does not have):
Magic Windows / Section Compiler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOP4tcr1kl8

I've entered the first two chapters for you as an example. You can fill in the rest.

When you upload a chapter, put the file duration (mm:ss) in the Notes field and the uploaded URL into the Listen URL field, and mark it from Assigned to Ready for PL. :)

No worries! Section 1 is PL OK. Wonderful reading, and impressive job for your first solo recording.

Very nice reading, wow! I am really enjoying this novella so far. I had never read it until now.

Section 2 PL notes:
21:56 5 seconds of silence at end of file will suffice (currently 8.5 seconds)

Section 3 PL notes:
02:53 Misreading/stumble ("at last the town clock struck three" read as "at last the town clock stuck three")
15:37 Missing word (the first half half of the word "meanwhile" is missing)
15:47 Click/snapping of fingers

Have you heard of Checker? You can check the technical specifications of your files against LibriVox standards using the program. We require the technical specifications outlined in the LibriVox wiki here. Currently, both files are too loud. Section 2 is 92.3 dB, and Section 3 is 93.6 dB. The acceptable range is 87-91 dB, and we aim for 89 dB. Here are the instrucions to de-amplify a file in Audacity: Select the whole recording. Click Effect > Amplify. In the Amplification box, enter the number of dB you will to de-amplify by, preceded by a negative sign (-3.3 for Section 2 and -4.6 for Section 3). Verify that each file is around 89 dB using Checker, then re-upload. Thanks!

I've re-uploaded those two sections. I used the checker, and the sound level on both of them is now around 88dB. Let me know if there are any further corrections!

I've just added chapter 4 to the MW. It was pretty long, hopefully not too many mistakes! :|

Chapter 6 is ready for PL! This is my first time reading the Double too. I love Dostoyevsky, but the Double's my favourite of his- it's so hilarious and tragic at the same time.
