The Outline of Science, Vol. 4 by J. Arthur Thomson (1861 - 1933).

After 9 years waiting for a complete e-text of volume four, here I present to you the final volume of "The Outline of Science". :D
The other three volumes are already in our catalogue: https://librivox.org/group/567

And now, this project is complete too!
All recordings can be found on the catalog page:
https://librivox.org/the-outline-of-science-vol-4-by-j-arthur-thomson/

The Outline of Science was written specifically with the man-on-the-street in mind as the target audience. Covering scientific subjects ranging from astronomy to biology to elementary physics in clear, concise and easily understood prose, this popular science work is largely as relevant today as when first published in 1922.

In this fourth volume (of four), we learn about bacteria, luminous organisms and lower vertebrates as well as domesticated animals. Other chapters are devoted to ethnology, health, relativity theory and what science means to mankind. (Summary adapted from the first three volumes by Availle.) ( )
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/B-001-002-149/
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Please don't read figure captions and bibliography! You may skip footnotes if they are only bibliographic information - ask if you are unsure.
Also ask if you encounter a table, in general, I'd want them read.

  8. AFTER recording
    Need noise-cleaning?

Interesting choice, but: sure!

It's time to wrap this up. The first volume was catalogued in 2008, the other two in 2011.
I'm so thrilled I finally found an e-text of the fourth book in the series! :D

Thank you so much!

2 sections assigned, DPL added to the database. I'd say we're ready to move out of the sandbox!

Hi and welcome..back!

I see that you've already got an [OK] on your test, so section 12 is for you!
Have fun with it - and let me know if you want to read the rest of the chapter.

I'd probably like to, but figure I should see how this section goes before committing!

Hello there, your friendly DPL is reporting for duty. The impeccably narrated sec.3 is a resounding PL OK

:?: Shouldn't we set some standards for newbies here (or for oldies like me whose memory is not as good as it was a few decades ago) :?:
Jo skips figure references; sure, makes sense, but shouldn't we explicitly tell everyone to do that? OTOH, I participated in projects where narrators tried to read fig. titles and captions. :hmm:
If there are footnotes, do we have an agreement what to do? How would we narrate tables?
Any other surprises for narrators? Thank you!

Thank you for PLing!

You're making good points, I have made a note on top of the MW. Anything I missed?

May I please claim chapter 16? 4000 words seems like a good jumping in point to this all again!
