Ingersoll on VOLTAIRE, from the Works of Robert G. Ingersoll, Volume 3 - Lecture 4 (1833 - 1899)
Col. Ingersoll begins his lectures on famous people as follows: "It is hard to overstate the debt we owe to the men and women of genius. Take from our world what they have given, and all the niches would be empty, all the walls naked—meaning and connection would fall from words of poetry and fiction, music would go back to common air, and all the forms of subtle and enchanting Art would lose proportion and become the unmeaning waste and shattered spoil of thoughtless Chance." One of the most famous orators of his day, a contemporary and personal friend of Mark Twain and General Grant, Ingersoll's lectures on famous people in this series include: SHAKESPEARE, ROBERT BURNS, ABRAHAM LINCOLN, VOLTAIRE, WALT WHITMAN, HUMBOLDT AND THOMAS PAINE; followed by inspiring speeches on THE GREAT INFIDELS; WHICH WAY? (science or superstition); and ABOUT THE HOLY BIBLE.
Each lecture in Volume 3, plus 2 lectures from Volume 1 (of the 12 volume Dresden Edition), will be presented on Librivox as a separate audiobook in the series called Ingersoll Lectures, Famous People. (Michele Fry)

    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
NOTE: Ingersoll's language is generally lofty, often vehement, and not kind to church nor state, and even more so than usual in this lecture. Thus I strongly suggest readers review the text of any section before claiming.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/files/38803/38803-h/38803-h.htm
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Level of prooflistening requested: special (I will follow along with the text and notate any significant discrepancies).
Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening!

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Over to Readers Wanted.

If it please the noble woman of the Bayou, I would like to be assigned sections 5, 6 and 7.

The little bit that I've read ahead, has convinced me that this is Ingersoll at his best.

Didn’t Ted Delorme already do this in Ingersoll Lectures Vol. 2, sections 21 & 22?

Fiery anti-religion oratory by Ingersoll intermixed with high praise for Voltaire.
I earned a degree in Philosophy but never heard such high praise for Voltaire. His philosophical arguments were the main thrust of discussions about him, but almost equal time was placed on his novel "Candide". He wasn't mentioned in the same breath as Descartes.

Hello, Levine. Indeed, Mr. Delorme recorded many Ingersoll lectures for Librivox, from a book entitled Lectures of Col. R. G. Ingersoll—Volumes 1 and 2, not from the 12 volume Dresden Edition I am using. Ingersoll gave his lectures many times, in many versions, which his stenographers caught, and some were published in various newspapers, magazines and books. It is confusing at first.

Mr. Delorme's version may be slightly different from the one being done on this project. But that does not matter, because Librivox readers have the privilege, are even encouraged to make additional recordings of the same material. Each reader adds their own interpretation, and different listeners have their preferences.

Welcome to the LV playground. It's fun. Thanks for joining up, and I hope to see you around.

Thank you for the clarification, ma’am. In that case, I would absolutely love to have a go. I’ve been a devoted fan of Colonel Ingersoll’s for ages. I’d be thrilled to take part VIII if it continues to be available.

Hello again. I presume you've received your Welcome Letter via email, but in case not, be sure and read it. It tells you how to submit your One Minute Test, to make sure your technical parameters are set correctly for LV's platform before recording for us. Also, it helps if you Introduce Yourself so we can get to know you more quickly (interests, hobbies, languages, accents, recording experience, etc.). Once you get the OK on your test and are ready to record, I recommend you choose a few short pieces to record first, say 10 minutes or less (poetry and children's books are great places to find these), to get the hang of reading the BC's (Book Coordinator) first post, (which differs somewhat from project to project), recording, editing, naming and uploading files to the correct MC's (Meta Coordinator) folder, etc. HINT: 1500 words ends up being about 10 minutes long.

Meanwhile, I'll reserve Section 8 for you for a few weeks, and when you get the OK on your test and maybe some practice, come on back to claim your Ingersoll.
