Round About a Great Estate by Richard Jefferies (1848 - 1887).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/round-about-a-great-estate-by-richard-jefferies/

John Richard Jefferies (1848-1887) wrote of country life, natural history, and agricultural practice at a time when the industrial revolution was bringing great change to long-settled patterns of English life. In this book, a work of fiction, he aims to tell us something of "the former state of things before it passes away entirely.”

This is a gentle book with a keen eye for the beauty of the countryside, the uncultivated bonuses of plants and flowers; the antics of the birds and wild animals; and the agricultural methods, superstitions, and great generosity of the simple country folk who live on or about the Great Estate of the title.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I'd like to take a stab at this one. It's a gentle tale of an earlier, seemingly more peaceful time.

I hope I've got it launched properly. Let me know if I need to correct anything.

Yes! Let's have some fun!!! :D

The sound quality is good! The file - checker OK! And PL OK!

And I really love the idea that "though all the clocks in the world should declare the hour of dawn to be midnight, the sun will presently rise just the same". It is somehow cheering.

Bees 1, Parishioners 0!

Chapter 4
https://librivox.org/uploads/kikisaulite/greatestate_04_jefferies_128kb.mp3
Duration 22:53

Shall I tell you a little story that still amuses me, though years have passed? I was poking my way about in the Union Pacific's rail yard at Salt Lake City, Utah, angling to see and photograph the old steam-era turntable by the engine house. I suppose I may have failed to notice one or two No Trespassing signs on my way in, but the yard looked largely deserted and I wasn’t overly concerned. I had paused to admire one of the UP's mightiest engines, an SD70, I think, when I spotted a company truck rushing toward me. Worse, it was a pickup with a light bar on top. Uh, oh. Security. I’m cooked now, I thought.

The pickup slid to a halt beside me and the driver, a big fellow, leaned out of the window. "Are you the beekeeper?" he demanded. "We've got a really big swarm in the office." I allowed as how I wasn’t the beekeeper, sorry. "Well there's one around here somewhere," he grumbled. "We called him an hour ago." Then..."Try not to get hurt, okay?" he shouted as he drove away.

Saved by the bees…
