Nice story, Lynne, and PL OK. My Grandpa Planchon in France was a fly fisherman all his life, and I've always wanted to try it, but never had opportunity.

Don't know why anyone would criticize, certainly not me. Fencing is a sport --
"an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment."

An obvious candidate is the zccount of a village cricket match in "England, Their England" by AG Macdonell: he died in 1941, so it's out of copyright here, but the book was published in 1933. Does that rule it out for this collection?

Unless you could find it printed as a short story in a magazine 1924 or earlier, probably not. Let's see what Lynne says.

Yes, it is ruled out, I'm afraid. In all but rare cases the publication date needs to be 1924 or earlier to make it PD in the U.S.
BTW, an author who died in 1941 would be acceptable for readers in Europe... it is more than 70 years since death. But the work also has to be PD in the U.S.
