Morris has a lot of soul, unlike Cumberland. But I also thought Hawley must have brought out the worst in young Cumberland.

PL OK! I have been re-reading Simon Winder's "A Personal History of Germans Ancient and Modern". What do you think of this: "For many people there is a point to much European fighting from Napoleon onwards - there are clear, if contestable motives and meaningful, if tragic, sequences of events. I have always found it impossible to discern such ideas in the wars fought between the opening, religious, phases of the Thirty Years War and the outbreak of the French Revolution - everything seems to be just the result of the ghastliness of scoundrels dusted in wig powder." He enlarges on this point of view but I'll spare you. His contempt for Louis XIV is entertaining.

Yes! PL OK. I had done some research on Oglethorpe when he made his appearance in Boswell's Life of Johnson and I've take an interest in Georgia ever since. Not that I remember much about Oglethorpe except that he was old and was liked by the Club.
