The Life and Adventures of Peter Wilkins by Robert Paltock (1697 - 1767).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-life-and-adventures-of-peter-wilkins-volume-1-by-robert-paltock/
This is a story about a Cornish man who becomes stranded on an island and survives much like Robinson Crusoe did. Although he finds enough to eat, he is still lonely. Eventually he is saved by a woman named Youwarkee who has wings and can fly. They marry, have children, and live happily ever after. But the listener is also treated to stories about the discovery of strange lands, and strange peoples not unlike the adventures found in Gulliver's Travels. In essence it becomes an exploration into the possibilities of a utopian world blended with fantasy and science fiction. ( James K. White)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/21513
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

You're missing half the template - the bottom half. :)

OK, I got it now. I'm new at this.

Note for anyone desiring to be a proof listener on this project: I have almost all the sections recorded at this time, but at about Section 18 my computer upgraded to OS Catalina without my knowledge. Because of that I can no longer use that cool little Checker app to verify the volume. But I found another little app called MP3 Gain Express. I won't know if it's giving me accurate info until I start uploading these files on LibriVox, and you can tell me yes or no. Hopefully this won't become a big issue. What other Checker-type apps are out there and work on Catalina? Additionally, I've come to realize that Audacity doesn't work in Catalina. I use Logic Pro to record, but prior to the Catalina upgrade Audacity was my goto app for cleaning up the noise floor.

Some of these questions are best asked outside a project thread, where others will see it and answer. ;)

The Catalina/Audacity issue was discussed in the "Help! I have an Audacity Problem" thread. Here's a link to a post; apparently there's a solution further up the thread, and it's talked about a little below this post also: viewtopic.php?p=1640795#p1640795

Once you get Audacity working on Catalina, you should be able to add the ReplayGain plugin, which is another volume-checker tool. https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Measuring_Volume_within_Audacity

Thanks. I tried the Terminal launch workaround a few days ago, but it failed to resolve the problem for me. And I also saw the LibriVox thread referring to it. Oh well. The only proven solution is to downgrade to the previous Mac OS, Mojave. But that means erasing the hard drive and reloading all my old apps. I'll get a cavity filled before I do that again. :D (I posted this response to the Audacity/Catalina thread on LibriVox as well.)

Thanks, Lynette. Yes, I appreciate your help. These sections are relatively short. Hopefully it'll be easy listening. Today I ran all the completed sections through MP3 Gain. According to this app, each file is within spec. But if your volume checker says otherwise, would you tell me what db level you get. I'll make the appropriate tweaks until it passes muster.

I now have a bit of MC space, so I'll MC this.

Am I correct in the assumption that you have not used the new MW/workflow system? If that's so, here's info for you:

Detailed Instructions for accessing the Magic Window can be found in the document linked here: Instructions for Soloists

Video showing how to use the Magic Window (read the above document first - it has the information on how to log in for the first time, which this does not have):
Magic Windows / Section Compiler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOP4tcr1kl8

When you upload a chapter, put the file duration (mm:ss) in the Notes field and the uploaded URL into the Listen URL field, and mark it from Assigned to Ready for PL.

OK, this is set up.

My only comment is that this is volume 1, correct? In that case, you will want to say that in the intros and at in the outro at the very end of the book. Other than that, this looks pretty straightforward.

Thanks for taking on the MC job, TriciaG. I was only kidding earlier; I've been around the block a few times. I'll add Vol. 1 to each intro and at the end-of-book outro though. And away we go.

Section 0, 33:27, https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/adventurespeterwilkins_00_paltock_128kb.mp3

Section 1, 9:27, https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/adventurespeterwilkins_01_paltock_128kb.mp3

OK, let's see how these two sound. MP3 Gain told me they came in at 90 db.

I will listen to these tomorrow for content, but Checker fails them.

Volume is great; 44,100 is great; but looks like they're set at 80 kb instead of 128kb.
