Lovely, Catherine. I have not a single issue with your recording, which I enjoyed listening to. I had no idea that the study of anatomy was so advanced back then in Alexandria! Fascinating. And PL OK.Cemerson wrote: ↑December 30th, 2019, 8:29 pm If I did everything correctly, this should be section 10:

Please let me know if anything needs changed!

My sole comment would be that you left somewhat more silence at the end than is necessary: Librivox asks for a full 5 secs; yours is close to 8, so if you could reduce it to 5 in future recordings please?

Got the 'no footnotes', but need some clarification on what readers (& thus DPL) should do with an embedded reference in the text. eg, "This poetic febrifuge is translated in full by de Groot (VI, 1054-1055), and the demon... Omit, or read?YuqingJune wrote: ↑November 29th, 2019, 1:25 amThank you, Availle! I've updated the first post in this thread, which now says that no footnotes, quoted books, etc. should be read here.Availle wrote: ↑November 28th, 2019, 4:18 pm Aand, your magic window has arrived. Just in time for the weekend!
Everything looks fine, we're ready to go.
Just one thing: There seem to be quite a lot of footnotes. It might be good to decide what the readers should do with them. Essentially, you have the options: always read / never read / leave the decision to the reader
If you don't mind, now that we have a MW, I would like to claim "The Rise of the Universities". And, unless you're reading it yourself, the section on "Chinese and Japanese Medicine" please.
Have fun with this one!
The two sections are yours!

Certainly, I can do that. Thanks so much for the input!Jmbau13 wrote: ↑December 31st, 2019, 8:39 pmLovely, Catherine. I have not a single issue with your recording, which I enjoyed listening to. The history of medicine is actually a weird mix of very interesting and very frustrating to listen to. There are a lot of "WTH were they thinking?!" moments! One of my favorite non-fiction books is The Emperor of all Maladies, which is a natural history of cancer. Fascinating stuff!

Ah, an editing error. Good catch. Not the smoothest spot, but I've put back the missing phrase.Jmbau13 wrote: ↑December 31st, 2019, 8:23 pmGood reading Larry - I liked how you treated the many quotes by the way.silverquill wrote: ↑December 30th, 2019, 10:49 am Here is Section 25:

There is just one correction necessary:
~ 6.03 some words omitted from the quote "as Harvey (De Generatione) says; "opinion is the source of opinion. Democritus with his atoms....
So, glad to have you helping with this project, Jane!

It'll be better if we stick to not reading any footnote at all.
But that said, please feel free to keep the footnotes if the reader feel they are absolutely necessary for our listeners' understanding.
Thanks for asking, Jane!

I am not surprised - you really copped a mouthful with all the various names, languages and their pronunciations, not to mention the archaic language! I think overall you did a fine job with a difficult chapter.KevinS wrote: ↑January 2nd, 2020, 9:13 pm Section 17

Need to fix:
~ 6.20 You have read Louis instead of Louise as the text says; this does change the meaning (ie, the gender of the person)
~8.19 the faculty negatived (you read negativised)
~ 11.30 ... untrammelled study of nature (I heard untrampled)
~ 13.35 pronunciation of Hippocrates, as he is so central to the whole topic. There's some useful examples of how to say it here: https://youglish.com/pronounce/hippocrates/english/us?
FYI only (I know you like to know, and your choice if you alter or not), these ones I can help with:
- Rabelais is French, so the final 'lais' is most properly said as 'lay' ie, doesn't sound the 's'
- physiognomy has a silent 'g'
