An African Millionaire: Episodes in the Life of the Illustrious Colonel Clay by Grant Allen (1848 - 1899).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/an-african-millionaire-episodes-in-the-life-of-the-illustrious-colonel-clay-by-grant-allen/

"My name is Seymour Wilbraham Wentworth. I am brother-in-law and secretary to Sir Charles Vandrift, the South African millionaire and famous financier. Many years ago, when Charlie Vandrift was a small lawyer in Cape Town, I had the (qualified) good fortune to marry his sister. Much later, when the Vandrift estate and farm near Kimberley developed by degrees into the Cloetedorp Golcondas, Limited, my brother-in-law offered me the not unremunerative post of secretary; in which capacity I have ever since been his constant and attached companion." An illustrious scientist, Allen came to fiction as a more lucrative avenue than more serious writing. As well as writing ghost and detective stories, he introduced us to the illustrious Colonel Clay, a precursor of other gentleman rogue characters; he notably bears a strong resemblance to Maurice Leblanc's Arsène Lupin, introduced some years later. ( Lynne Thompson, quote from the first chapter)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/4715
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Hi! I'm completely new here and still getting my bearings. I'd love to record a few chapters of this book, if possible. I'd appreciate your guidance :)

Hi and welcome to Librivox!
There are a few things to do before you get started.
You will need to complete a one minute test - this is to check your specs are up to Librivox standards, and if not, you'll be given hints on how to remedy that. http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test
Please post your test in the Listeners Wanted forum (see the dropdown at the bottom of the page) for the speediest response. Waiting for the OK may seem tedious, but can save time in the long run.

All the chapters in this project are quite long. You will be talking about a final recorded time over more than 30 minutes. If you are new to recording, that can be overwhelming. Of course, you can choose whatever interests you, but, to be honest, 1000 words is a good length for a first recording. There is a very steep learning curve! When you see a project you like the look of, you will need to claim specific chapters rather than 'a few', eg chapter 1 or chapters 12-14. You may want to stick to one at first (see my comment about the learning curve!). You will probably find, at first at least, that the recording/editing time is 3 times the final file time. It does get easier, though!

Once you have the OK on your test, let me know if you would still like a chapter here.

It’s best to ask for an extension before the two month deadline :D

These are lovely stories. I'd like to take a crack at section 4 assuming 1, 2 and 3 are still being worked on?

I will assign you section 4 ... shewhospeaks had an extension and exceeded it without word, so I removed her name. I have no idea if she is still working on them, so if someone else requests them, that is fine. If the files are submitted before anyone else claims, I will still use her files.
