The English Language by Logan Pearsall Smith (1865 - 1946).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/the-english-language-by-logan-pearsall-smith/

A history of the development of the English Language and reflections on language change ( barbara2)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/englishlanguage00smitgoog/page/n7
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi! Would you kindly change your text source? Your link is to a transcription of the book on Gutenberg Canada. Books that are out of copyright in Canada aren't necessarily out of copyright in the United States (different copyright terms), so to be absolutely safe, we need either a scan of a pre-1924 version (not a transcription) or a version on US Gutenberg or HathiTrust, which are reliable sources for books that are PD in the US.

Luckily, there are several scans of this book on Archive. Would you please choose one of these to link?

Hi Jo. A typo in the heading - "Peasall" instead of Pearsall. I couldn't work out how to edit it.

I was thinking of Chaucer's prioress:

And Frenssh she spak ful faire and fetisly,
After the scole of Stratford-atte-Bowe,
For Frenssh of Parys was to hir unknowe.

Hi Barbara,

Section 3 is PL OK.

Yes, and it's very interesting about the differences between the Norman French that came into England (C without H) and the French of Paris.

My best,

Pam
