Children's Short Works Vol. 030.

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/childrens-short-works-vol-030-by-various/
Librivox's Children's Short Works Collection 030: a collection of 15 short works for children in the public domain read by a variety of Librivox members.
NEW READERS: Please read the Newbie Guide to Recording and do a short test recording before submitting here, just to make sure that all your settings are OK. Then please read this post carefully and refer back to it. It has all the information you need to submit a recording successfully.

This collection is for any children's short work in the English Language in the public domain, preferably less than 60 minutes. You are welcome to contribute as many as you wish, and there is no need to "sign-up" before recording as long as the work is clearly in the public domain. Please post here if you are unsure about public domain status.
Please submit poetry to: LibriVox Short Poetry Collection

Where can I find short works for children?
Try http://www.gutenberg.org/
http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/loccs/pz
or any other place you can find some - but they must be Public Domain - many children's things on the internet are not.

Multiple versions are always welcome, so you can record a story that has been recorded before. (If the same stories are submitted twice in the same collection, we will carry the second version over to the next collection) .

You may prefer to submit your recording to one of the other more specialised short story collections.

After 15 recordings are submitted, we will prooflisten, catalog and make them available to the public.

1. RECORD
  • Be sure to set your recording software to: 44100Hz, 16-bit
  • At the BEGINNING Say: "[Title of Work], by [Author Name]" "This is a Librivox recording. All Librivox Recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to volunteer, please visit Librivox.org"
  • At the END, say: "End of [Title], by [Author Name]"
  • If you wish, you may also say: "Read by...your name."
  • Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording or 10 seconds if longer than 30 minutes.
2. EDIT and SAVE your file:
  • Need noise-cleaning?Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear distracting background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit. The free version 2.1.1. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide. Note: Noisecleaning with earlier versions of Audacity is not recommended.

  • ID3 Tags:ID tags are no longer needed - they are now produced automatically.

  • Save or export your recording to an mp3 file at 128kbps using the following filename:
    • File Name: Put file name all in lowercase, and the title all in one word (no leading articles i.e. the, a, an, and NO SPACES): csw030_shorttitleinoneword_readersinitials_128kb.mp3,
      e.g. csw030_scarletgiantbean_ge_128kb.mp3
3. SUBMIT your recording:
Please upload your finished recording using the LibriVox uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please copy to post in this thread):
Uploader: http://librivox.org/login/uploader
Image

If you have trouble reading the image above, please send a private message to any admin
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: m8b1.
*If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

4. POST the following information in this thread:
  • • The link you copied from the uploader to your file
    • Name of your story
    • Author (birth year - death year)
    • Translator if applicable (birth year - death year)
    • Source from which you read (i.e. Gutenberg etext url)
    • Length in minutes
    • If this is your first Librivox recording, I will also need your name as you would like it to appear on the catalogue page and the URL of your homepage if you have one and would like it linked to your name on the catalogue page.

Want to see if what you plan to record has been done already?
http://librivox.org/newcatalog/search.php?
Search by keywords in the Catalog Search
But don't let this stop you from recording your own version!

Please don't download files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi :D Hope this is helpful. It's a fun little piece that would be a delightful bedtime story for a child. I thought I'd "get my feet wet" with something short & sweet.

"Rags (The Story of a Dog) by Karen Niemann no dates in her Gutenberg bio
Source: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/22750
Length: 8:48
First contribution in many, many moons: Tom Hirsch www.VoiceofTampa.com

I did a search before selecting this one and didn't find that it had been done before.
Hope I covered all the submission bases correctly.

Maria

I discovered another cute children's story on Gutenberg, but I have a question.

This story will probably run about an hour in length and is comprised of three chapters. I have a recollection of reading a discussion about how to handle chapters in a reading but I cannot, for the life of me, find where I saw those notes.

Please tell me the correct way to proceed. Do I submit each chapter individually and someone at your end compiles them into a unified whole? Or do I master them here and submit a single file?

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Hi Tom,

For a collection like this, you would put them in one file. All editing is done on the reader's end. :-)

If it is a stand alone book, and runs more than an hour, setting it up as a solo project would be better. In that case you can submit the chapters as individual files.

Thank you, Ana ~ it is PL OK!

Just a note for any future submissions. Please provide the text link even if you have read from the same source in the past. It saves me the trouble of tracking it down. I had to go back to the other completed project to find it. :-)
Also, please remember to tell us what the running time of the file is! Thanks!

Hi Maria

Here's the one we talked about.

https://librivox.org/uploads/m8b1/csw030_tommytrot_th_128kb.mp3
Tommy Trot’s Visit to Santa Claus
Author: Thomas Nelson Page 1853-1922
http://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/25896/pg25896.txt
Length: 1:22:00
Read by: Tom Hirsch www.VoiceofTampa.com

Oops! I *thought* I had run Tommy through Checker - - - but I guess I checked the individual files but not the combined, final file. My bad. It's over the 1-hour limit. If you would rather I submit the individual files I'll be happy to do that.

Hi Tom,

It will definitely need to be done as a separate project with separate sections. Besides being a bit long for this collection, we try not in general to have files over 80 minutes, as that is the length of a CD in case someone want to burn it to one. This file is a tad over that!

Here are the instructions on how to start a solo: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=13513
You will need to fill out this template here: https://librivox.org/add_project
And then post the resulting text in a new post in the New Projects Launch Pad! :-)

Thanks!
