Short Ghost and Horror Story Collection Vol. 035

This project is complete and all audio files can be found in the catalogue: https://librivox.org/short-ghost-and-horror-collection-035-by-various/

NEW READERS: Please read the Newbie Guide to Recording and do a short test recording before submitting here, just to make sure that all your settings are OK. Then please read this post carefully and refer back to it. It has all the information you need to submit a recording successfully.
  1. How to submit a story, and 'how it all works' here
Please select and record any short ghost or horror story in the public domain. Try to stick to works that run less than 60 minutes. There is no need to "sign-up" before recording... as long as the work is clearly in the public domain, just start recording. Multiple versions are always welcome, so don't worry whether someone else has recorded your selection already; we're happy to hear your version too. :)

A ghost or horror story should have something of an otherworldly or gruesome nature at its core. (Preferably, it should be nominally fictional, but there are enough 'true' ghost stories that will be accepted into this collection as well.) Take a look at the various collections in this forum and decide which collection your story would work best in. You can find suggestions here.

Please note that a lot of Lovecraft's work is still under copyright - there's a thread here that has an up-to-date list of confirmed PD stories.

Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which story you are submitting to the collection. Please include all this information:

    • link to the text source
    • author name
    • title of the story
    • duration (runtime) of the file
    • if this is your first recording: how you would like to be listed in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal web site/blog.

Read points 5. to 7. below for what to do before, during and after your recording, and how to send your file.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
No. This collection will be open until it is full (20 stories have been submitted), at which point another one may be started.
  4. Where can I find horror and ghost stories?
A good source for ghost and horror stories is https://web.archive.org/web/20141105215835/http://www.classichorrorstories.com/. Of course there will also be bunches on Gutenberg.

Previous Short Ghost and Horror Collections can be found here - duplicate versions are fine, though not in the same volume.
  5. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  6. DURING recording:
Leave no more than 0.5-1 second of silence at the beginning of your file.
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "[Story title] by [Author name]. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
      "[Story title] by [Author name]."
    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of [Story Title]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording!
    .
    .
  7. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit (optional).

The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
File Name: (lower case, separated by underscores):

    ghohor035_shorttitleinoneword-noarticles_author_readersinitials_128kb.mp3, e.g. ghohor035_roomintower_benson_ce_128kb.mp3
    .
    .
  8. ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)

Please ignore tags for this project - they will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.
    .
    .
  9. Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
Any questions?
Please post below or PM me.

Please don't download files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hello again Rapunzelina...
Wow, this was fast; Vol. 034 isn't even finalized yet. :D
I am thinking of recording Rhoda Broughton's "The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing but the Truth," published in 1873 as part of a short story collection called Tales for Christmas Eve: https://archive.org/details/talesforchristma00brourich/page/n5
This is an epistolary tale, presented as letters between two women.
I would be happy to record it solo, but it might be fun to have 2 (female) readers.
Or might that be too much trouble for The Almighty BC / editor?
WDYT?
Thank you...LJB

Sure, it sounds interesting! Being letters, it should be an easy job for editing, compared to dialogues. But the editing would be done by the reader/readers. I think you could advertise in one of the threads in the Dramatic Works forum, to see if there are any interested.
A solo reading would be great, too!

I guess it depends on how lazy I am at any particular moment...

Hi, Jennifer! Thank you! I'll sign you up as the DPL! So you also have access to the Magic Window. Let me know if you have any questions about proof-listening and the MW.

I'm not sure where to post this, but when I click the "play" button for the 1st recording in Collection 34, I get a "Page Not Found" error.
Do others get this error? Could this be resolved?

Thanks.

Thanks for posting! I will check and get back to you. I had some trouble with filenames when cataloguing so it's possible it's related.

Another logistical Q for Rapunzelina:
There was a "book suggestion" by Chuck W. from 10/18/18, about an Arthur Conan Doyle story called "Lot No. 249" -- it sounds interesting and I think I'd like to do it for GhoHor 035, but it's pretty long. So my Q is, can I break it into 2 or more parts, each one a different file?
Thank you...LJB :D

This is around 13000 words, which to me it would be 2 parts, and it would be ok to include in the collection. But if you feel that the story has natural breaks in more places that would suit your reading pace, you can also consider making it its own project with more sections :)

PS: I'm still working on the issue in the last collection... Thanks!!

FAB.
Thank you -- on both accounts! (035 & 034)
We always need more gho/hor stories in the world.

Hi,

I am thinking about recording "The Ghost of Dr. Harris" by Nathaniel Hawthorne (I saw it was included in the list of unrecorded ghost stories).

The text can found here.

I have some questions regarding Librivox (I have had an account for a while, but am just now starting to be more active).

1. What are the guidelines for putting a recording under the short story collection v the ghost story collection (or for that matter, any similar collection)? For example, could you put a ghost story in the short story collection?

2. In the link above, the text is difficult to read (and the "text only" version of the file on the site is difficult to read, as well). Besides gutenberg, what are some alternatives to finding easy-to-read texts?

3. Lastly, when recording a work (for example, a short story), does the recording have to be perfect ( e.g. no stumbling) before it is uploaded? Do people often re-record parts of a work, or record an entire chapter or so without stopping? I'm wondering if re-recording parts of a work will sound odd after recording.

Thanks.

Hi there!

I'm new to LibriVox and narrating in general. I'd love to take on a reading or two (if that's allowed) in this collection as my first ever voice over. When reading through the guidelines, I came across this line: "if this is your first recording: how you would like to be listed in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal web site/blog."

What is the LibriVox catalog and what does a listing consist of?

Thanks so much!

Hello CB! Welcome to Librivox!

Here's an example of a reader's page in the catalog https://librivox.org/reader/251
where you can see their forum name and the catalog name they chose to use, and their url (a personal website).
And here's mine https://librivox.org/reader/6924 where I use the same forum and catalog name, and no url.
A reader's page lists all projects you've read for, and also, under the "Reader Sections" link, you can keep track of your ongoing projects, either as a reader or as a proof-listener.

The "catalog" is our database with all audiobooks that have been completed and "cataloged" so far. And all audiobook pages have active links to the readers pages and the authors pages, etc. And that reader link would use as text the catalog name of the reader.
I hope that makes sense! I'm so used to the catalog and its functions by now, that I can't picture how it looks to someone seeing it for the first time  And I'm sure you'll get used to it soon, too
