Capital and Interest, by Frédéric Bastiat (1801 - 1850).
This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project https://librivox.org/capital-and-interest-by-frederic-bastiat/
Frédéric Bastiat was an early 19th century French economist/statesman whose common sense essays tried to battle the rise of socialist ideology after the French revolution, where provisional governments were rivaling each other for power. Of central concern was who should control the money. How is wealth created? How should it be divided amongst the people? What services should government provide? Same questions we are asking now. This essay addresses the popular fallacy of the day that Capital should be available to all gratuitiously, without necessity of paying back loans, and looking upon any form of interest as Usury. Bastiat argued that capital is created by savings, and savings are what makes borrowing possible so the common man can get ahead and prosper, and lending is only worth the risk if the lender profits by it, via interest. He demonstrated the law of supply and demand, that, in essence, interest decreases as availability of capital increases. His basic premises is that without a leisure class (people who have money to spare over earning daily bread), there would be nothing to borrow, so that neither the common man nor society can prosper. Translated from the French by Horace White of Chicago. I have divided this essay up into segments for ease of comprehension. (summary by Soloist, Michele Fry)

Hi Michele, I can get you a MW so you can start on this topic. Though I know the author by name, I am wholly unfamiliar with his work.

Just for clarification, the book's title on Gutenberg is SOPHISMS OF THE PROTECTIONISTS, I will change the title then to what's the official one. Or do you maybe only want to do the final chapter in the book ? I see it has this title. :hmm:

I'll wait for confirmation before I do anything. :)

Thanks, Kitty. The book is a collection of essays. I am only doing the one entitled Capital and Interest, and breaking it up into 7 segments.

ok that makes sense. So I set it up like that then.

I see that William Jones is a first-time DPLer now. He should be able to access the MW though, since he did some solos already.

@William: just to make sure from the start: will you be using the Checker program to check technical settings as well, or are you unable to use it for some reason ? In that case I would handle this aspect of the checking. I just want to make sure that all is well when we come to the time of the cataloguing. So please let me know :)

@Michele: have you alerted William already to the start of the project ? Or should I wait a few days until he has looked in here to bookmark the thread ?

Bill is an experienced PL'er, having done quite a bit of it for me in the past. I'll PM him to check in. And of course, I always run my own files through Checker, but he will probably do it too.

Whee, I have a Magic Window. Thanks.

wait ! that can't be. Do we mean the same person ? Because the one I set up now was not yet "cleared" for DPL duties. I had to set him up as new DPLer.

Bill has PL'd various sections for me on projects where I'm BC and DPL but needed someone to PL my sections. I don't know if he's been a designated DPL before. He has BC'd a project before, that I DPL'd (actually coached him in the process so we co-DPL'd) so he knows how to manage a MW. He should be checking in shortly.

it's not a matter of vouching ;) no I was simply puzzled and afraid I had put the wrong reader in the MW  but ok, mystery solved, if he was never DPL before, then he didn't have the official clearance. I changed that now. :)

Since you notified him, I can move us over to Going Solo then.

Happy recording !

Okay, thanks. Looks like the team is assembled. FYI, this project has been awhile in the making, so it shouldn't take long to finish up. All sections are recorded, I just need to proof listen and do a bit of final editing before posting. I will now go and pre-claim the cover.

Bill, I hope you will enjoy my rendition of Bastiat's plea. He tries hard to lay out his argument in terms a simpleton can understand, but I sometimes feel his frustration. I tried to consider that at the time he wrote, the monarchy had recently been overthrown, the French people who were largely illiterate and ready to riot at a moment's notice if they couldn't get some relief from their poverty, were willing to fall for any Utopian promises. Bastiat had his hands full to get the people thinking rationally about "supply and demand" and "economic principles of prosperity". He was another Thomas Paine, preaching common sense to the masses.

Sonia, it looks like you changed the section numbers to single digit in the file naming. I presume that is okay because there are less than 10 sections? Let me know and I'll change all my saved file names to comply.

oh.... well I must admit I am leaving on holidays now on Sunday, so unless you would have finished before then, the cataloguing would have to wait another week until I'm back. Hope that's ok with you. I didn't consider that it would go so fast in here.
