The Odyssey by Homer (c. 8th cen - c. 8th cen). Translated by Samuel Butler (1835 - 1902)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-odyssey-version-3-by-homer/

The Odyssey is one of two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer. It is, in part, a sequel to the Iliad, the other Homeric epic. The Odyssey is fundamental to the modern Western canon; it is the second-oldest extant work of Western literature, while the Iliad is the oldest. Scholars believe the Odyssey was composed near the end of the 8th century BC, somewhere in Ionia, the Greek coastal region of Anatolia. The poem mainly focuses on the Greek hero Odysseus (known as Ulysses in Roman myths), king of Ithaca, and his journey home after the fall of Troy. It takes Odysseus ten years to reach Ithaca after the ten-year Trojan War. In his absence, it is assumed Odysseus has died, and his wife Penelope and son Telemachus must deal with a group of unruly suitors, the Mnesteres or Proci, who compete for Penelope's hand in marriage. IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Just curious, but have you considered reading a different translation than Butler?

But, I'm up for another DPL gig with you, unless you have someone in the wings.

At the risk of being rude---heaven forbid---I just want to point out there is already a Butler translation available, which is fine, of course.

Maybe I'll find time to do the Pope one day.

I think I’ll stick with the prose version. There's no solo recording. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

I'm convinced there's errors in the GB text at the beginning of Books 3 and 4. The chapter title splits what should be the first line of the chapter, with half appearing at the end of the previous chapter. So I've made the edit at the end of Book 2 and read Book 3 the way I believe was intended. I will make the same fix at the beginning of Book 4 when I record it.
