The Late Mattia Pascal by Luigi Pirandello (1867 - 1936). Translated by Arthur Livingston (1883 - 1944)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-late-mattia-pascal-by-luigi-pirandello/

Mattia Pascal grew up in a small Italian town not dissimilar to that of the author's upbringing. Pascal leads a somewhat feckless boyhood, allowing opportunities to slip away from him and living on the accumulated but dwindling resources of his family. As a young man he finds himself duped into poverty and an unhappy marriage made sadder by grief. He escapes on an adventure at Monte Carlo where he submits himself to Fortune which provides him with an extraordinary erasure of his old identity and the funds to maintain a new one. With the passage of a couple of years however he becomes horribly disillusioned with his situation and the isolation it brings. In a dramatic act he reassumes his old persona and returns to his home town, only to find himself written out of the script of his own life.
In this novel Pirandello explores, as in his other works, themes of identity and reality, laced with plenty of wit and irony. (Peter Tucker)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Wow, we have a team! Thanks so much.
I thought I'd get this project posted straight away. Not sure I'll start recording anything for a few weeks as I'm about to go away imminently and won't be able to record until I get back. But should still be doable in the time frame.
Many thanks

I did wonder if you would be interested in the other books in the series but didn't want to ask in way that sounded pushy. And it really doesn't matter because this looks like a good choice! It'll be nice to have something from 1923 as well.
No worries about the time frame, whatever that may be. It will move forward. I'll be away here and there too, but I'm not disappearing. I hope your travels are pleasant.

Section 00 is PL OK. Welcome back! It's nice to hear your voice again.

In case it didn't appear on your radar, there was a good gallery of the partial eclipse a couple of days ago:

Dave: could you please check the way this project is entered in the catalogue? It's not coming up when I search for Pirandello, but it is coming up under Livingston (the translator). It's not an urgent query, but I'm raising it in case it's easier for you to change anything - if you have to - now.

It should be corrected now. Now is always better. Thanks for spotting that.

Sections 01 and 02 are PL OK.

I don't know if you'd be interested, but I've set up a project on Legamus (https://legamus.eu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4493). It's a sort of experiment modelled loosely on the weekly/fortnightly poetry projects here (without such a short turnaround!), and as many readers as wish can contribute their own version of the same text. It's a Yeats poem from 1933. No worries if it doesn't appeal, but I'm trying to spread the word!
