A Spring Harvest by Geoffrey Bache Smith (1894 - 1916).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/a-spring-harvest-by-geoffrey-bache-smith/

G.B. Smith is best known for his close friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien, who would go on to write the fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings. He was a talented poet and attended Oxford. In 1915, he fought for England in World War I, and died of wounds received in 1916. After his death, this volume of his poetry was published by Tolkien and dedicated to Smith's mother.

    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/48371
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Can't believe we don't have a Tolkien nerd here who's already latched on to this gem! I'll be reading the opening note and foreword. I may do one or two poems, once I've had a chance to browse them a bit more. [EDIT: I'll also read the last two poems.]

To potential MCs: I may decide later to combine some of the shorter poems together so as not to have a lot of choppy short sections. Input on this would be appreciated! I don't do much poetry, so this is a bit of a new endeavor for me.

Oh yes, and this is a new author for us! There is a Geoffrey Smith in our catalogue already, for one Christmas poem. Given the date of that poem, it could possibly be the same Geoffrey Smith, but I couldn't find any real evidence of it.

Oh, no I won't be MC ing. I like my specialty of PL ing and occasional BC-ing and I'm content with that.

Looking forward to listening.

Hi,
I just wanted to let you know that I'm having computer problems again, this time more serious, so it may be a couple of weeks before I'm back on line again. :(
I'm really disappointed but I wanted to be sure you know I haven't disappeared!

Don't worry about it. I'm thinking it'll be awhile before we have much that will need to be PLed.

I, for one, have been over here breaking my heart because Gutenberg's been down for almost 24 hours now.

Jeffrey. Bache to rhyme with H. However, as it seems that he used his initials quite a lot, I'm going to ask readers to state his name as G.B. Smith. (See instructions in the first post.) I'll be reading his full name in the Preface and the last section of the project.

I don't like choosing sections for readers, especially if I haven't already worked with them extensively to know what they like and want to read. When I have an MW, you can take a look and then tell me which poems you want. Or, there's nothing to stop you (now that Gutenberg is back up) from skimming through the book and claiming a few before the MW is ready.

Well, I'd be very happy to do all of the "Last Poems" section, but that may be taking away from others. Just let me know what you prefer.

That is quite a lot, about 25 pages of poems. (Bearing in mind that I plan to read the last two.) I don't mind it, since we do work on a first come first served basis, as long as you're not claiming more than you think you'll be able to get to in a reasonable time. We'll wait at least until we have the MW. :)
