Chapter 29 has been uploaded to the uploader - etiquette_29_post.mp3 (and spelled right this time, too....) Let me know if there's anything that needs to be fixed.

Length: 12:31
File Size: 11.4 MB

Now, which chapter to go for next....?

Okay, I'll take a deep breath and take a double to fill in a gap - chapters 36 and 37. The first is pretty short, the second might take a few nights work...

Wow, mine is long. I've read for 40 minutes and am only about halfway through -- I think I'd better split the chapter in half and make it two separate recordings, if that's ok with you.

Yes, a chapter split is just fine. Warn me if we need another line in the box or anything, and I'll ask kri for one. I can't believe the length variation in these chapters. 12 min vs well over an hour (not counting the little intro and concluding chapters).

Kara, do you know if there's any way to estimate the word number (and audio length) of a Bartleby chapter? If it can be done, I might make notes on the remaining chapters so people will be forewarned.

OK, Firefox does tell me how many Kb are on each page, so I've been able to estimate chapter lengths based on the ones we've got so far. Unfortunately, there is not a linear correlation between Kb per page and minutes of finished audio (seems logarithmic or something, I'm too lazy to try to figure it out) so my estimates of anything longer than 55 min are likely to be way off.

Yes, I think anything over 60 min should be split. Those would be chapters 12, 14, 17, 21, 22, 25, and 27. Chapter 14 is truly enormous based on the Kb page count, so it could be longer than 90 min finished -- I just can't tell yet. May be best to split that one into three files.

Kri, how do we do that?

And for anyone who's claimed chapters that are longer than expected, you are (of course) welcome to relinquish them if they are just too much for you right now. I am probably going to extend the target date too; we'll see how it goes later on.

What I do to estimate file times is paste the text into a word doc at 10pt font and one page is about 4 minutes finished recording. Therefore 10 pages would be about 40 minutes. Just a rough estimate based on my own reading style. :)

Oh, cool, Esther, thanks! I'll try it and see how close I was.

edit -- Yowza. That puts Chapter 14 at 120 min and Chapter 27 at 130 min (though 27 is weird because it's got diagrams of notes and a long chart at the end, so not sure how long it'll really take).

Here's more that I didn't write in my PM. I suggest splitting the chapters up in 30 minute increments. I know that will give us lots of chapters, but it's a good chunk of audio on one file. If we let them get too big, it makes things difficult for those that like to burn the tracks to CD.

Just let me know how many sections I need to add, and I'll do it. Once that is done the names next to each section will need to be adjusted, and you'll need to find a way to show everyone which section is theirs. This may involve pasting each section you've slit somewhere online, and linking to it for each section. Does that make sense?
