yes ! I was thinking exactly the same thing. It sounded like the text was wrongly put in that spot. It would have suited better before the play, when the author first mentioned the painter doing the portrait. I'm sure it was an editorial blooper, but since we shouldn't edit the original, I left it in that spot. But it's a sort of anti-climax after the stage play.
