I'm looking for a guide to recording levels / settings here on Librivox - is there one? I know most folk use Audactity (like me) so thought there might be something? thanks

This is what I use:

https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Checker

It was written by the husband of one of our admins just for us, is free, safe and easy to use.

You'll also come across people talking about MP3Gain but I've never used it: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Questions_and_Answers -- it seems to be solely concerned with volume, while checker checks bit rate and other things. One thing to note: files over an hour long automatically fail Checker, but we can accept up to 72 minutes, or thereabouts.

May I claim section 8?

*Now I am sending you this unofficially because with some of my other recording there seems to be an issue with background noise (humming), and I just wanted you to let me know if you can hear this too. If you do, or do not hear it, let me know.
Please review audio recording for section 8: https://librivox.org/uploads/lynnet/friendlyfive_08_hungerford_128kb.mp3 Time: 08:48
I have been warned about sending audio recordings before I have been accepted for a chapter, but seeing that nobody has claimed this chapter I thought it was less risky, but that being said I look forward to hearing back from you, and If this chapter has been claimed you may ignore this audio recording and message. I just want to reassure me if you can hear humming in the background. Thank you for your understanding.

I look forward to hearing back form you :D

Kind regards,
Chad

Hi and welcome to Librivox!
There are a few things to do before you get started.
You will need to complete a one minute test - this is to check your specs are up to Librivox standards, and if not, you'll be given hints on how to remedy that. http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test
Please post your test in the Listeners Wanted forum (see the dropdown at the bottom of the page) for the speediest response. Waiting for the OK may seem tedious, but can save time in the long run.
You will also need to be added to the catalog of readers. I will add you using your forum name, but if you prefer your real name or a pseudonym let me know. We can also link to a personal blog or website. Be sure to read the first post - all the info you need is there, but if anything doesn't make sense, just ask. The wiki (see the top of the page) has bundles of info too.

PL notes Ch 8:

The first thing I notice is that the file is in stereo. This is an easy fix. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJ-Nq-os2YI

I did not notice any hum or noise that was distracting. However, when I ran the file through Checker, it showed as 40.7dB, which some DPLs would flag. Although we have no actual numerical goal for noise, I tend to find 25-30 dB is about right. Here, I wouldn't worry about it, though.

The volume is a little on the low side, but within the acceptable range, coming in at 86.5dB. We have a goal of 89dB, but can usually work with 86-92dB.

Once the file is converted to mono, this will be PLOK, but you might want to tweak your settings a bit more next time. You're close, but not quite hitting it yet 8-)

I appreciate your feedback. I amplified the volume and converted to mono.
Can you please review this updated audio recording for Chapter 8:

Hope this is a much better version now, however, if there are any further concerns, please let me know.

It is now PL OK... but be warned, increasing the volume also increases any background noise.
