Mrs. Pretty and The Premier by Arthur Adams (1872 - 1936).

The Premier has decided that being married would be good for his image. He asks his stenographer for advice: (Premier) Good. Just jot me down a precis of the points made by your fifteen admirers when proposing - the points that specially appealed to you. (Stenographer) I'm afraid, sir, that what most appealed to me could not be expressed in words. In fact, it wasn't words. But no, sir. The subject is too sacred.... (Premier)...But you could tell me how they began. The opening address, eh? How did they lead up? (Stenographer) Most of 'em just kissed me, sir. It seemed to give them confidence. (Premier) But I couldn't possibly start like that. (Stenographer) It's always done sir....

Here we go with a play from Australia suggested by Son of the Exiles. Though the author claims it has universal appeal. So let's throw another shrimp on the barbie and try it, mate! Gender neutral, of course. And Kitty is our DPL shelia.

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://ia802701.us.archive.org/31/items/threeplaysforaus00adamiala/threeplaysforaus00adamiala.pdf or https://archive.org/details/threeplaysforaus00adamiala/page/92
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Chris has suggested that the role of Gregory might suit me, so I will claim it. I cannot do an aussie accent so will have to pretend he is an English immigrant. There were a lot of them.

Actually, Alan, the very first public servants in Australia were all "old lags" (ie, emancipated English convicts) from the transportation fleets.

I'm sure you can bring the authentic "no names, no flogging" persona to the role.

Thanks for this, Chris.

Fascinating story, particularly as Greenway came from my original home town of Bristol and was born in Mangotsfield a place I know well from my school days.

Since the estate of Wyonora is mentioned quite a few times in the play, I guess it couldn't hurt to have a "received pronunciation" of it.

What do you think, Beth? "Wy-o-NOR-ah"? https://librivox.org/uploads/xx-nonproject/wyonora.mp3
