Carolin and Angelique,

Here are sections 30 and 31 for PL
https://librivox.org/uploads/carolin/folklore_30_smith_128kb.mp3 9.27
https://librivox.org/uploads/carolin/folklore_31_smith_128kb.mp3 12.49

By the way, page 184 of the book was only scanned through a sheet of that tissue paper that protects the colour plates. I could read almost all of it through the tissue but there was one sentence I couldn't quite make out. It's concealed by the title in the middle of the page:
https://archive.org/details/ancienttalesandf00gordrich/page/n335

Fortunately, the only words I couldn't make out are about 4 or 5 words that I think must describe the hermit, and I was able to miss them out without affecting the flow of the sentence or (I am quite confident) the story as a whole. See what you think: the relevant part of the recording is at 2.26-2.31 in section 30.

PL Sections 30 & 31

Hi Rob!

Before I get to the notes for correction, let me start off with well earned praise!

*Congratulations* and *Thanks* for dealing with those text difficulties; I note that besides the page overlayed with the transparency, which you did well in interpreting (Oh, My! Not an easy task!), I noticed that in the "Full Text" version, there is a major text repeat, of about a half page. You had to do some text editing here, and did it seamlessly.
So, yes, well done in that regard, and many others. This is a truly great reading, Rob!

------------------
A few notes here, with links that I hope will be helpful to you. *Please* do let us know if we can answer any questions for you. *Smile*

Background noise level on 30 is at 41.6
Background level on 31 is 42.5

In case you've not found it yet, you can use this to check your own basic tech levels. *Smile*
https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker

Anything over about 35dBs is a little high and noise reduction is needed, so that people who are listening with earbuds can do so more comforably.
I don't want anyone to be deterred from hearing this. *Smile*

Here is a link that may help you with eliminating some of the white static noise running through your recording.

https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Noise_Cleaning

The rest of Section 30 checks out as PL OK! No further action is needed.

In Section 31,
There are two repeat lines listed; the time which I cite is at the first instance, as I think that generally, people prefer to retain the second.

2:11 Repeat line: "As to which anything should be interesting."
8:10 Repeat line: "... to the fortune-teller Kamo Yamakiko"

Fortunately, this is usually easy to correct. Simply cut the phrase which you like least.

I DO hope you will sign up for more sections here; I look forward to hearing more from you!
Let us know when and how we can help.

Best,
~Angelique

Thank you both!

Rob, i found you another scan of the same edition with page 184 intact https://archive.org/details/ancienttalesand00mongoog/page/n334
Could you please compare your recording with the text anx make any changes that are necessary? Thank you! :)

Angelique and Carolin,

Thanks, I have made those corrections to 31, added the missing words to 30, and run some noise reduction on both files. Ready for spot PL.

Thanks very much for the helpful comments, advice, and encouragement, Angelique! I'm not using hard copy -- don't know what I was shuffling papers for. :? Thank you for catching it!

I found this guide to Japanese pronunciation useful:

http://iprc.soest.hawaii.edu/users/furue/jp-pron.html

But I think I sometimes read the Japanese names with greater confidence than accuracy.

I'm glad you liked the spirit voice... I was worried that maybe it sounded a little too much like laryngitis... :)

Anyway, here are the new versions for spot PLing:

Here are chapters 4 and 5:
Again, David. Well read! (If you have a Japanese/English pronunciation source, I would very much like to know of it! I may record a section or two of this book, and it would be help.) *Smile*

The notes that I have for you are all related to technical/sound issues.
Please do not be discouraged. Editing is THE most difficult part of recording and almost all of us suffer a little in the beginning while learning. Fortunately, it's usually a quick jump to vast improvement!

Section 4

4:24 and 5:01
a shuffling and then a *Click*

7:40 a chu-chu-chu sound. (This may well be due to overly "noise reducing" which creates flickers of silence and then picks the noise back up, creating a "looping" effect.
One tip to correct if using Audacity: you can find a piece of "clean" pause of same length, copy and paste.)

Spirit voice is especially well done!

10:42 Shuffling papers

12:08 a slight *thump*

I read from the computer screen, but I've heard several people say that a large readers stand helps them avoid the shuffling when using hard copy.
I suspect it takes quite some practice, regardless.
(AMAZING how much a mic picks up, isn't it? *Smile* ... and *GROAN* at myself!)

Section 5

2:37 Shuffling

I enjoyed this: "thought that he had (to put it in
vulgar English) * a real good thing"

8:01 *click*

I will happily spot PL this and am looking forward to your other readings on trees!

As always, let us know if you have questions. We'll help. *Smile*

Hello!

I would love to read the rest of the stories that are open, i.e. 32, 34, 35 and 38-44.

I'm new here, but I've got the 1-minute test approved, so I'm good to go.

Thanks,
Vlad

Sections 4 & 5 are now PL OK.

Good job, David on eliminating the clicks and shuffles; I know that's work, but the end product proves a very good return! *smile*

Thank you for sharing the pronunciation guide. I see that all sections are now claimed (YAYYYY!) so I likely won't have a chance to delve into that which you kindly share here, but I shall save it for any future need.

In so far as the shuffling, I could only guess that it was papers, but now recall that on one of my recordings (which I had to re-do entirely because of the issue ... just far too much of it to save, with the editing skills I had at that time anyway.) the scratching grating effect was due to ... a silk blouse I was wearing! Just my usual body movements created an astounding (Oh, MY!) effect.
So, the shuffling here could be the result of something similar to that ... or a different source entirely. *Laugh*
Regardless, you took care of it. Thank you.

HaHaHa. Yes, confidence over accuracy. A mark of the true artist. *Smile*

*Smile* The spirit voice was well done, subtle and distinct, even at low rumbling pitch.
But ohhh, yess. I have not only a couple of recording out takes with me saying in mid-reading a sentence "Oh. No. That's not right."
and "Well! THAT's Not What I Meant to Do!"

*Laugh* Just part of the shared experience. *SMILE*

Thanks for your work here, David.

Best of recording on all projects!

A very pleasant listen, Maria!

"What ho, she bumps !" Amusing intonation here. *Smile*

Larry, Chapter 27 is smoothly read!

We are missing part of the text though, at the very beginning.
(Sometimes the formatting of scanned books makes it difficult to REALLY tell where the story begins.)
Here are the missing paragraphs, for your ease in finding them to record, insert and reupload. *Smile*

Please let us know if we can help.

XXVII
SAGAMI BAY

HATSUSHIMA ISLAND is probably unknown to all
foreigners, and to 9999 out of every 10,000 Japanese ;
consequently, it is of not much importance. Nevertheless,
it has produced quite a romantic little story, which was
told to me by a friend who had visited there some six
years before.

The island is about seven miles south-east of Atami,
in Sagami Bay (Izu Province). It is so far isolated from
the mainland that very little intercourse goes on with the
outer world. Indeed, it is said that the inhabitants of
Hatsushima Island are a queer people, and prefer keeping
to themselves. Even to-day there are only some two
hundred houses, and the population cannot exceed a
thousand. The principal production of the island is, of
course, fish ; but it is celebrated also for its jonquil flowers
(suisenn). Thus it will be seen that there is hardly any
trade. What little the people buy from or sell to the
mainland they carry in their own fishing -boats. In
matrimony also they keep to themselves, and are generally
conservative and all the better for it.

Best,

Hi Carolin. Ok, so now I know why I'm confused. I uploaded the test file to test and not listeners wanted. My apologies!!! But now my question is "Where do I find Listeners wanted"? I'm on the site where it says to upload files and don't see "listeners wanted". Sorry about that but hoping you can point me in the right direction!! Thanks in advance.

Hi larry, two things:

1. I need you to decide on one forum account. Please let me know which one you want to use and i will deactivate the other.

2. We ask readers to complete the one minute test before getting started. Please repost your test recording in listeners wanted and wait for feedback. If any edits need to be made, make those and wait for your ok before getting started on the section for this project. This is in case any edits are needed - you will have to fix the same issues in your section too, and it would be better if you did these before uploading.

Thank you! :)
