The Story of Ahikar by Ahikar . Translated by F.C. Conybeare (1856 - 1924) and others

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-story-of-ahikar-by-ahikar/
The Story of Ahikar is a fictional work. It is a colorful story but considered to be a work containing great wisdom. The story of Ahikar is considered one of the earliest "international books". It can be found in a variety of geographical translations and has been circulated in the middle east and near east regions. ( CJ Plogue)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=hvd.32044084558170;view=1up;seq=183
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    Magic Window:

  • The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
    START of recording (Intro):
    • "Chapter [number] of The Story of Ahikar. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
"The Story of Ahikar, by Ahikar. Translated by F.C. Conybeare, J. Rendel Harris, & Agnes Smith Lewis. [Chapter]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of The Story of Ahikar by Ahikar. Translated by F.C. Conybeare, J. Rendel Harris, & Agnes Smith Lewis. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"
    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Story of Ahikar, by Ahikar. Translated by F.C. Conybeare, J. Rendel Harris, & Agnes Smith Lewis."

There should be ~5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.
  • Example filename storyofahikar_##_ahikar_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. storyofahikar_01_ahikar_128kb.mp3)

OK, this is set up.

You said this is about 150,000 words? You might need to break it down into more sections, then. We limit sections to 72 minutes, so they can fit on an audio CD. That's about 10,000-12,000 words.

If you find you need to add sections, there's an Add New Section button in the Magic Window when you're in there.

In the intro, I don't think you need to say "The story of Ahikar, by Ahikar". That's up to you. :) But do include the translators, please.

I think that's all I need to say right now. :)

The whole book may be that large but The Story of Ahikar by itself is only 13,028 words and breaks down easily.

Intro 202 words
Ch 1 ~ 861 words
Ch 2 ~ 2,424 words
Ch 3 ~ 2,444 words
Ch 4 ~ 1,270 words
Ch 5 ~ 2,099 words
Ch 6 ~ 1,733 words
Ch 7 ~ 1,988 words
Total = 13, 028 words

Thank you!
Kind Regards!
CJ

Hi! Sorry I haven't checked in for a while but, yes. I am still working on it. It is so short, I thought I would just upload all sections at once. I have them read and cleaned up. Just trying to get them all pre-PL'd before upload. I will go ahead and upload the ones that are ready so we can get rolling on PL.

I am not sure what I have done exactly in the "dividing up" of sections. But it seems I have several really short sections and at least one fairly large one. I would probably like to balance them out before the end of the project. That may be better served prior to PL'ing. I will try to wrap up pre-pling in the next couple of weeks so I can divide the sections up better and have a cleaner finished project.

So... all we need is a PL, and this could be going to the catalog, correct? I see the notes in the MW indicating that the other sections aren't needed, and want to be sure.

Hello CJ and Tricia--I will PL these three sections this afternoon. (I know from experience that CJ's projects are a pleasure to hear.)
Kind regards,

WOW!! I left town for the weekend and was in a place where I had no signal and no internet. That moved quickly!

Thank you Lucretia! Always a pleasure to cross paths with you!

Thank you Tricia!
Kind Regards!
