The Clue of the Gold Coin by Helen Wells (1910 - 1986).

This project is complete and can be found in our catalog at https://librivox.org/the-clue-of-the-gold-coin-by-helen-wells/

Volunteers outside the USA: Helen Wells died in 1986. Her work is still protected by copyright in places, like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1954) or Canada (author's death plus 50 years).
Vicki Barr is a popular mystery series for girls published by Grosset & Dunlap from 1947 to 1964. This book is volume 12 of The Vicki Barr Air Stewardess Series.

When a shipment of priceless gold doubloons being transported on her flight from New York to Tampa goes missing, Federal Airline's stewardess Vicki Barr is unwittingly dragged into a sinister conspiracy spanning two countries. Vicki faces a determined group of criminals willing to go to any lengths to stop her from discovering their secret. It is up to her to save the Gasperilla Pirate festival, rescue a trapped innocent old man and a young friend she helped in getting the very job that would risk his life and career. With the help of the FBI, Vicki takes on a ruthless gang of villains who have disappeared with the ancient gold and left no trace the police can find. - Summary by amitsharma

  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

If this is your first solo, I will be here to help in any way you may need. Here is a video about getting into the Magic Window for the first time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cDPSmlTjGM&t=140s if you already know how, just ignore this, ok? :D

I notice that you are recording this in India and we would need to confirm that this is in the public domain in your country before you can record it. If you have any information that can help with this please let me know. It is PD for USA readers but not for other countries that have a longer span after the author's death.

Just saw the video. Very informal and helpful. Good job Phil.

Just a quick question, do I NEED to be a BC in addition to being the reader for a solo work or can I just be a reader?

Thanks for your help and for the video. I wouldn't have known about the login process without it.

Oh boy, I'm not a lawyer at all but a quick google got me to the following link: http://copyright.lawmatters.in/2011/07/101-public-domain.html

Here's an extract from that link. "...In India, depending on the nature of the content, copyright would generally subsist in it for a term of either sixty years after its author’s death or sixty years after its publication. As such, once this term is at an end, the content enters the public domain... "

I hope that will do. If not, please let me know what I can additionally provide within my means and I'll go about collecting it.

with warm regards,

Amit

Hey Phil,

Here's probably a more authentic link for you: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory/India

This also confirms what I posted above and being wikimedia would probably carry more weight. I also found online The Official Handbook of Copyright Law in India issued by Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development but it's a very very big book. I can post the link here if you'd like to go through it but like I said, I have really no information or interest in legal stuff beside the general day to day living requirements.

Since it has been 60 years since this book was published it is now in the public domain in India and would seem legal for you to read. This is my opinion of course, I am not a lawyer and I do not play the tuba. (and I'm not that good with mathematics either but i can subtract......)

So do I go ahead with it? I mean officially?

PS: Just a curious observation. I have seen many Indian residents here in the forums and some seem to have been around for a while. I'm surprised this issue has not been addressed earlier.

The issue of public domain is constantly one we deal with. Most works are indeed PD in India. The problem is that this work was published a lot past 1923 and so we needed to check that's all. But to answer, yes, please do go ahead with it.

Moving this to Going solo. Just a note: as a soloist you did not need to post the number of words. That is mostly for group projects so that readers can see the approximate length before claiming a section. no harm done, just a note for future solos to save yourself some time. :D
