This project can now be found in our catalog at https://librivox.org/human-nature-and-conduct-an-introduction-to-social-psychology-1922-part-3-by-john-dewey/

Human Nature and Conduct - Part 3 (of 4): The Place of Intelligence In Conduct.
John Dewey, an early 20th Century American philosopher, psychologist, educational theorist, saw Social Psychology as much a physical science (with rules and predictive power) as Biology and Chemistry. This project encompasses Part 3 of 4 of his book Human Nature and Conduct. An Introduction to Social Psychology, published in 1922.
Dewey's uses the words "HABIT" and "Impulse" as a specialized catch-all words to describe how a person and his/her objective environment interact. This interaction is the basis for moral and ethical judgements. Dewey writes: "All habits are demands for certain kinds of activity; and they constitute the self.” In other places he also asserts that "Habits are Will." In this third part of the book, Dewey describes how we make ethical judgments (Dramatic Rehearsal), the occasions which call upon the exercise of intelligence, and the relationship among aims, goals, means and ends, and emotions. ~ Summary by William Jones, Soloist
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/41386
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): SPECIAL, Standard plus read along with the text and notate any significant discrepancies. Reader requests crits and comments.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I am eager to get this project revved up and the 9 sections done.
The book has and Introduction and four Parts.
Part 1: The Place of Habit in Conduct
Part 2: The Place of Impulse in Conduct
Part 3: The Place of Intelligence in Conduct
Part 4: Conclusion(s)

I have recorded Part 1, earlier this year and am in the process of recording Part 3 (this project).
Parts 2 and 4 will probably come along later, but Parts 1 and 3 have impressed me with their insights more than the other two parts.

General Note: Dewey was one of the founders of the school of Pragmatic Philosophy. One doesn't find "normative" or "prescriptive" demands in this book. He DESCRIBES how we humans work and how to make our society better.

Thanks, Phil.
I put Michele in as BC, is that right? Do you want to be co-BC so you can have access to the magic window?

Thank you for the consideration, but I am a bull in a China shop when it comes to LV internals. If Michele will handle things like the Part 1 project I will be pleased and grateful.

MW is filled in. Titles seem kind of long with the sub-titles, but I suppose that doesn't matter. I've seen long titles here and there.

Titles of sections or title of the whole project? This is up to the soloist or the BC, they can shorten them if they wish. Whatever seems most right to all involved.

~ in the title indicates that we are advertising for a DPL (Dedicated Proof Listener). Someone should come along shortly. Meanwhile, go ahead and upload your completed sections. They aren't nearly as long as they were in Part 1.

Did someone ask for a DPL? I'm available, as I just finished DPLing another project.

It was me. :D
And you certainly are a welcome addition to this project.
Bill, a newbie to LV, is passionate about Dewey and about interpreting him correctly for posterity. That is apparently a rare find as Dewey isn't much represented on LV for all his influence. Bill has put a lot of diligent effort into parsing this material right [because it is very complicated for the average mind (like mine) to follow.] So hopefully you can help him meet his goal to have Dewey sound intelligible and be correct! If anyone can do it, it is Bill, and he is wide open to crits/comments! (And by the look of your involvement in your other interesting projects, I have to give you too a  )
