The World's Story Volume IV: Greece and Rome by Eva March Tappan (1854 - 1930).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project https://librivox.org/the-worlds-story-volume-iv-greece-and-rome-by-eva-march-tappan/
This is the fourth volume of the 15-volume series of The World’s Story: a history of the World in story, song and art, edited by Eva March Tappan. Each book is a compilation of selections from prose literature, poetry and pictures and offers a comprehensive presentation of the world's history, art and culture, from the early times till the beginning of the 20th century. Topics in Part IV include Greek mythology, the classical Greek period and the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire. ( Sonia)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/worldsstoryhisto04tapp
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Ok you have all waited long enough...here is PART 4 !! In which we will travel to Old Greece and Old Rome. Let's mingle with Greek Philosophers in one section and with Germanic Barbarians in the next. I guess there will be something to suit your tastes.

As in the previous parts, for those of you who are new to the project, some special notes for this project:

1) Again I would like to have the footnotes included. Just put them after the sentence of the footnote marker, wherever you think it fits well. Say: “Footnote - [read footnote] - End of Footnote”.

2) And like before, the explanations to the illustrations will be included. They have their special sections. Please include every detail from the title, including, painter, time, or whatever is written in the book (also include the line "photograph/painting, page xx"). The same for each section, not just the pictures.

3) I have noted down in the MW where to read the long LV disclaimer. All sections under 3 pages long can use the short disclaimer. Check the first post on how to read the intros.

*****

And a very special longer note for the 4 mini dramas we are having this time. All roles are GENDER NEUTRAL !

I want the voice credits to run this specific way, so please, if you choose one role, give your voice credit line according to these 4 sentences (with the intonation that would make it fit well in the part of the sentence where your credit will be located):

For Section 4: The sacrifice of Iphigenia, by Euripides:

"recording by Sonia as the Narrator, Devorah Allen as Iphigenia, Alan Mapstone as the Chorus, Foon as the Messenger, Monika as Clytemnestra and Tomas Peter as Agamemnon"

For Section 23: The bout between the poets (405 B.C.) by Aristophanes:

"recording by Sonia as the Narrator, Alan Mapstone as Dionysus, TJ Burns as Aeschylus, Monika as the Chorus, Tomas Peter as Euripides, Foon as the Voice and Nemo as Pluto"

For Section 33: The sale of the philosophers (second century A.D.) by Lucian:

"recording by Sonia as the Narrator, Alan Mapstone as Jupiter, Tomas Peter as Mercury, TJ Burns as the First Customer, Foon as Pythagoras, Sandra as the Second Customer, SonOfTheExiles as Diogenes, Angelique Campbell as the Third Customer, Monika as the Fourth Customer, Jim Locke as Democritus, Devorah Allen as Heraclitus, Roger Melin as Socrates, April6090 as the Fifth Customer, Craig Franklin as the Sixth Customer, Todd as the Seventh Customer, Larry Wilson as Chrysippus, Sarah Hale as the Eighth Customer, Eva Davis as the Ninth Customer and Nemo as Pyrrho"

This play is about Philosophers getting sold on the slave market by Jupiter and Mercury. The problem in the text is that the customers are not differentiated by numbers, but I wanted one customer per philosopher, even though I know this runs up my voice count to 19 readers  So you know I am counting on you all to make this happen.

The gods and philosophers are straight-forward, but to avoid confusion to find the parts of the customers, here is a break-down on who is appearing when.

First Customer (appears only on pages 208-210)
Second Customer (appears only on pages 211-214. Last sentence: "I couldn't give more.")
Third Customer (appears only on pages 214 with first sentence: "Come forward here" and 215)
Fourth Customer (appears only on pages 216 and 217 with last words "for my part")
Fifth Customer (appears only on pages 217 with first sentence "what is the main feature" and 218 with final sentence "Dion, of Syracuse")
Sixth Customer (appears only on pages 218 with first sentence "What's his price" and 219 with last sentence "Carian figs are cheap enough")
Seventh Customer (appears only on pages 219 with first sentence "What do you mean" and 220 with last words "self and company" [this is inside the narrator's part])
Eighth Customer (smallest part: appears only on page 220 "how do you make that out" [this is in the narrator's part])
Ninth Customer (appears only on pages 221 and 222)

For Section 62: At the funeral of Caesar (44 B.C.) by William Shakespeare:

"recording by Sonia as the Narrator, Alan Mapstone as the First Citizen, Monika as the Second Citizen, Foon as the Third Citizen, TJ Burns as the Fourth Citizen, Nemo as Brutus and Tomas Peter as Antony"

And now, let the fun begin :)

Ok, 86, the roads, seems to be a nice short one, so I claim that one.
8, live in Greece, sounds interesting too and is short, perfect for me :)

In the plays you may assign me just a role you wish for me in each. :)

well actually this is the smallest project so far, less than 100 sections. But yes, the 4 plays will be quite some work to assemble already :?

Thanks, Nemo !
