Sue and Craig -

Here's another on a local phenomenon, by no less a luminary than David Stark Jordan, the then president of Stanford University -

Title: The Silent City of the Muir Glacier
Author: David Stark Jordan (1851 - 1931)
Link from the uploader: https://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/snf058_silentcity_jordan_ps_128kb.mp3
Link to the source: https://archive.org/stream/popularsciencemo51newy#page/161/mode/1up
Length in minutes: 9:31

I'm not sure if the local phenomenon is the Silent City or Dick Willoughby, maybe both. A thoroughfare here in Juneau is named after Willoughby. The only local landmark named Jordan is a creek, but it is named after a saloon keeper.

A Little about the Kirafy Spectacles.

Imre Kirafly and Bolossy Kiralfy were highly influential burlesque and spectacle producers in Europe and the United States toward the end of the 19th century. The brothers paved the way for many of our modern day spectacles. When they travelled to New York City in May 1869, the Kiralfy Brothers may already have envisioned how to produce their ideas of spectacle on stage. In August 1873, the brothers first produced their own musical spectacle, a revival of The Black Crook at Niblo's Garden.

Thanks, Fritz! :)

Amazing what human credulity will accept. An odd topic for a college president's pen, but then, "back in the day," the university campus boasted what was called a "museum" which displayed Leland Jr's collection of bird nests along with the golden spike.

Thanks, Craig. When I read the credit for Jordan it read "President of Leland Stanford Junior University". I was a bit confused and it took me a while to figure out it was Stanford who was the Junior, not the university.

Thanks, Sue--I'd only had a fragment of this before, and I'm so pleased to have found a full text. Being able to share it here is the icing on the cake!

Here's another one from me:
https://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/snf058_cochineal_ealand_sa_128kb.mp3

Cochineal
from Insects and Man, by C. A. Ealand
1915
https://biodiversitylibrary.org/page/17844341

There's a beautifully illustrated short work from the Metropolitan Museum, Cochineal Red, The Art History of a Color, which I would love to have been able to read, but of course it's not PD; worth a look, however: https://archive.org/details/CochinealRedthearthistoryofacolor
