Thanks, Philip. I created my account in 2012, hoping I could start recording immediately after signing up, but unfortunately, school and work pulled me away from being a volunteer for quite a while. I'm so glad to have ample free time now and dedicate some of it to reading for LV.

Anyway, I just finished recording 61. Here's the link:

Ali:

The only thing keeping Section 61 from being PL-OK is some background noise which intrudes about 5:30 and runs through the end of the piece. (Nice job remembering the addition to the outro since this was the last section of the work.

Highlight 5:30 to the end of the piece and run the noise reduction. That should clear it up.

Nice job!

Many thanks,

Philip

Hi Peter, here's a tip from me re Noise Reduction in Audacity

TIP: I always record 5 seconds of silence before I start talking, and 5 seconds of silence at the end, and I try to record the whole file in one sitting, because background noise seems to vary at different times of day around my house. If I can't, I record a 5 second sample in between sittings. Also my voice quality changes depending on time of day, whether I've eaten recently, humidity, etc. If I make a mistake I just keep going, repeating the phrase where the mistake is contained. No clicks. No pops to mark the spot. I don't go back to listen and/or edit in "lay down track" phase. Save file. The easy part is done.

When ready to edit, I check to see if the background noise is louder at the front or back end (it varies considerably on a long file), I take my 4 second noise sample from the loudest end (Effects/Noise Reduction/Get Profile). Then I select the whole file and apply the noise reduction. My settings are 7/3/3/reduce. I make 2 passes. That usually works. If it's still a tad noisy, I take another noise sample from the loud end (much reduced by now), and apply the noise reduction with that sample. If you do 3 or more passes at the full profile, you might get some distortion (such as echo), but if your last pass is reduced, it doesn't seem to matter.

You will have to experiment find your own method. It depends on your environment, your equipment, etc. Just futz with it, and in time you will get it just the way you want. Meanwhile there are plenty of short projects to work on that don't require perfection. Enthusiasm counts and we're just glad to have you. :D
