Hi Craig,

Revised: I changed the ending to: Self-Sacrifice by Woodrow Wilson At Kansas City, February 2, 1916.

https://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/snf056_selfsacrifice_ww_hzf_128kb.mp3

Duration: 1:29

Ty for your suggestion; I could only edit the ending.

Hi Sue,

Ty for doing this collection, I have discovered that there is so much out there to explore.

I know you are busy but I was wondering if you could help me? I was not sure if this story, on Anna Coleman Ladd, would have been acceptable? I would have read it including the Archives link.

TYIA for your time.

Hi Helen,

I'm glad you are enjoying exploring the wealth of nonfiction that is out there to read. Anna Coleman Ladd sounds like a fascinating person and someone whose story most definitely belongs in the Short Nonfiction Collection. The "catch," if you want to call it that, is finding something to read about her that fits LibriVox requirements, i.e. 1) that it was published (that is published in print, not in manuscript) and that 2) it is in the public domain (which generally means published before 1923). A general biographical note, such as that written in the present era by the Smithsonian staff to introduce the collection of Anna Coleman Ladd materials, would probably not qualify. Materials in that collection (such as newspaper clippings) might qualify if they meet the Smithsonian's "permitted uses." You can explore what the Smithsonian has to say about "permitted uses" here on their website: https://www.si.edu/termsofuse/

What I often do to find material to read is to go directly to archive.org or books.google and put in a name, or term, that might lead me to something in the public domain. In the case of Anna Coleman Ladd, I went to Google books and explored the term "Studio for Portrait Masks." What comes up then is mostly modern-era books about Ladd, which won't be in the public domain. But what I do in that case is click on one of these titles; then I click on the "gear" symbol in the upper right corner of the page, which leads me to the "Advanced Book Search" and then enter under criteria "full view only" and relevant dates, in this case 1915-1923. Doing this for Studio for Portrait Masks led to some interesting things that are in the public domain. https://www.google.com/search?tbo=p&tbm=bks&q=studio+for+portrait+masks&tbs=,bkv:f,cdr:1,cd_min:Jan+1_2+1915,cd_max:Dec+31_2+1923&num=10

From these finds, I thought, in particular, the article from the Journal of the Institute of Homoeopathy (1919) was particularly good: "New Faces for Old: One Phase of Reconstruction" https://books.google.com/books?id=UlA2AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA595&dq=studio+for+portrait+masks&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjJ1tuH4tzaAhVpxYMKHbJBCmgQ6AEIQDAE#v=onepage&q=studio%20for%20portrait%20masks&f=false. The article is quite detailed and has a photograph of Ladd at work. This article is the type of thing that would make a perfect read for the Nonfiction Collection.

Feel free to ask for more help if you need it.

Hi Helen,

I'm glad you liked that article. :) It will make a super read.

My not-so-original advice about recording is to do all your corrections on a separate Audacity file and then cut and paste; always keep a separate "clean" version of the recording to fall back upon. I didn't do that in the beginning & learned the hard way.

Hi Sue,

When this project is completed, will you do a follow up Vol. 057?

Your advice is greatly appreciated and extremely helpful.
I made a separate copy of it in my note pad. :D
