The Mysteries of Marseilles by Émile Zola (1840 - 1902). Translated by Ernest Alfred Vizetelly (1853 - 1922)

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: https://librivox.org/the-mysteries-of-marseilles-by-emile-zola/
The elopement of Philippe Cayol, an aspiring liberal, poor and untitled, with Blanche De Cazalis, niece of a powerful millionaire and politician sets the stage in this novel full of twists and turns with villains a plenty. Philippe's brother Marius strives to protect the two lovers from the De Cazalis' uncontrolled fury. Although written in his youth Zola's signature style, his indignation about injustice and his vivid characterization of the noble, the wealthy and common man is very evident in this non stop adventure. ( Celine Major)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/mysteriesofmarse00zolaiala
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I couldn't get the text link in the first post to work - I was looking for a copyright date . I'll try later but it does look a bit odd?

I'm not suggesting there is anything wrong or right about this version , just thought it was interesting when I saw it.
Many of the public domain translations are by the Vizetelly family and are quite dated. Henry Vizetelly (1820-94) was fined and imprisoned for three months in 1889 over the publication of La Terre, which was considered offensive. Subsequent editions of all of Zola’s novels were heavily edited by his son Ernest Vizetelly (1853-1922) in order to avoid further prosecutions. Hence there are often two ‘Vizetelly’ versions; those published after 1889 are generally considered inferior to those published before 1889.

Hmmmm not sure what to do now. I was told by a couple of people to look for Vizetelly translations when I recorded Markets of Paris but they probably didn't know this. I can't find any editions before 1889. :hmm:

I can always move on to something else if you prefer.. :) Your thoughts?? :help:

I was just re-reading your post Anne and as you said it is neither wrong nor right. As we include the name of the translator the reader can judge for his or herself. :)

I'll go ahead. I'm happy to have the info for the future however. I always appreciate the input since I'm still rather new here.
Thank you!!!

From my quick reading of another translation I'd still take an edited Vizetelly over another translation!
