Robert:

Just a couple of notes for the phonograph piece, in addition to Lynne's about the sound effects. Nothing major or difficult to fix:

There is a chair squeak that intrudes on the reading at about 13:13 (I thought it might have been a duck quack, but that may be the antihistamines at work.)

Throughout you have recorded phrases about omitting the figures or pictures...they occur at 3:15, 4:47, 6:26, 7:59, 8:41, 9:45, 11:03, 12:30. The narrative flows better and is easier to listen to without them.

Other than that, very nicely read. It was a pleasure to listen to this reading.

Many thanks,

Philip

Ok, I did save the clean files, so I'll do that.

Can you tell me more about the direct upload process? Is it just a different MC selection in the uploader?

You don't do it via Librivox at all. I have never done it, so not totally sure... but go to https://archive.org/ and next to the search button on the right is an upload button. (I think you will see it... I can see it as a LV admin). If you click on that, there is another "upload files" button, which is where you actually choose which files to upload.
Doing it this way, you don't get the exposure or protection LV offers, but it does mean you can do some things our rules don't allow.

Thank you.
Edit: I would never have thought of watercress selling as an occupation :hmm:

I did wonder whether to do the bit about the people who hunted for anything sellable they could find in the sewers, or who went round picking up "pure" - dog-do, which they could sell to the tanneries......!

And his piece on the child mudlarks is just too upsetting.

Patrick:

I just finished listening to the London Dock piece. It is well read and PL-OK--but, the first 1 2/3 pages of the text are missing. (I suspect the full chapter would read out to about 18 minutes or so long.)

Before I mark this PL-OK, I'll need some advice from Lynne. I think the entire reading is worthy of including in this collection--even if it runs a little long. The stark contrast in socio-economic status is (to understate the matter) revealing. I appreciate your reading.

Many thanks,

Philip

Patrick, I have discussed this with Philip, and if you would like to read the extra pages, we can stretch the time to accommodate it. If you'd rather not, just let us know and it will be marked PL OK.
Thanks for finding such an interesting piece.

Hi again,

I've re-posted the story of the Phonograph without the static record sound effect.
