Here's what I'm sending to Project Gutenberg (David Widger) concerning 49:
-They returned to the cabin on the hill; but later in the month, (on the 23rd,) they crossed

I made no changes to 49...just explained the discrepancies .
But please tell me if I still don't "get it".

eg. "on the 23rd" added

After I did the PL you explained why the changes were made.
