The Light of Stars by William Henry Giles Kingston (1814 - 1880).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: paste link
William Henry Giles Kingston, often credited as W. H. G. Kingston, was an English writer of boys' adventure novels. He was a zealous volunteer and worked actively for the improvement of the condition of seamen. But from 1850, his chief occupation was writing books for boys, or editing boys' annuals and weekly periodicals. He started the Union Jack, a paper for boys, only a few months before his death. His stories number more than a hundred. ( Wikipedia)
Each fortnight a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!

The Light of Stars by William Henry Giles Kingston, read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal url.]
Then read the poem:
The night is come, but not too soon;
And sinking silently,
All silently, the little moon
Drops down behind the sky.

There is no light in earth or heaven,
But the cold light of stars;
And the first watch of night is given
To the red planet Mars.

Is it the tender star of love?
The star of love and dreams?
Oh, no! from that blue tent above,
A hero’s armour gleams.

And earnest thoughts within me rise,
When I behold afar,
Suspended in the evening skies
The shield of that red star.

O star of strength! I see thee stand
And smile upon my pain;
Thou beckonest with thy mailed hand,
And I am strong again.

Within my breast there is no light,
But the cold light of stars;
I give the first watch of the night
To the red planet Mars.

The star of the unconquered will,
He rises in my breast,
Serene, and resolute, and still,
And calm, and self-possessed.

And thou, too, whosoe’er thou art,
That readest this brief psalm,
As one by one thy hopes depart,
Be resolute and calm.

Oh, fear not in a world like this,
And thou shalt know ere long,
Know how sublime a thing it is
To suffer and be strong.

At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.

Here is my reading:
https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/lightofstars_kingston_lcw_128kb.mp3 1:45

I was going to PL your recording, but the link in the MW points to rainonthedown (Which is why its important to PL from the MW and not the link in posted in the forum)

As I mentioned, the link in the MW is incorrect.

I did listen to this link. I am hearing the title as "The Night of Stars" instead of "The LIGHT of Stars." Otherwise, PL OK.

Thanks Larry, I wonder about myself some days. :roll: Edit is made and uploaded with correct file this time.

In your reading I hear The Light of The Stars in the intro, otherwise PL OK.

Sorry, but I'm still hearing Night instead of Light in the title.

Did you get my submission?

Thank you Sarah, good reading. :D However there is a noticeable background hum which is easily corrected with Audacity's Effects / Noise Reduction, please let me know if you need help with this. The ending silence should be 5 seconds, there is only 2 seconds in your file.
Always include the file length with your upload link. :wink:
