Actually, I didn't know that. And I just finished reading the first act stage directions! lol
oops, sorry I didn't think of mentioning it before. I figured you already read stage directions at one point in your career

Remember to upload scene by scene, not Act by Act. We are assembling short scenes immediately and don't have to wait for the entire act then.

Okay, well, I DID record the whole scene as one file. Easy enough to separate them though. I thought I'd check the email messages to see if you had mentioned what to call the files, but it looks like yahoo is having trouble right now! Sigh. So I'll have to ask another question here. Would the first scene be file:

kinglear_narrator_1.1

Or something different?

Brad (who hopes he's not asking too many questions! lol)

asking questions is good. And since you are the new boy in town (well in our group), we cut you some slack

Okay, I hope I did this right! I'll post the rest of the act tonight, since I have to go out in less than half an hour, but here's the first scene.

Woohoo! :) Great to see so much action already.

Just one quick note, Brad: I don't know if you recall, but we previously agreed on some pronunciations; for Regan, we decided on 'REE-guhn' over 'RAY-guhn'. I think you only say it once in 1.1, so there is no need to change it, but for future scenes, it's best to maintain consistency with the chosen pronunciation---unless Sonia prefers 'RAY-guhn', in which case we'll defer to her since it's her character. :P I just assume it's 'REE-guhn', based on what a Google search gave me. Our old Shakespeare expert is no longer a part of our group; otherwise he would've told us the answer right away and we would've been done with it.

I wasn't sure anymore, so didn't say anything. Raygun sounded good to me. But I can also get used to Reegun.

Let's ask our King Lear, I believe Craig has watched the BBC version. How did the "great actors" pronounce it ?

Out of curiosity, I have checked the other two LibriVox versions, and in both, the narrator uses 'REE-guhn.' I think that is the standard pronunciation. But we can rebel if you want.

It wouldn't take much effort from me to change it if that's the consensus.

As promised, the rest of the narrator for Act One. Waiting word on whether or not to correct my pronunciation of "Regan" in the first scene.
excellent Brad, all scenes perfect and PL ok. I seldom have so little to correct on the stage directions. :9: I'm also happy to see there are not that many stage directions. Sometimes too many break the flow of the performance. But these are ok.

As for Regan, yes, since it's right at the beginning, maybe we should settle for Tomas' pronunciation if that seems to be the general way of pronouncing her. I need to remember. Yes, if you could correct that one line in Scene 1 then, we have the first Act narration complete then.

Thanks

Well, reading stage directions doesn't take long--so here's the rest of the narrator. Plus the correction to 1_1.

I'll take a little longer with the characters, since I need to decide still on what voices I'll be using.

Wow, amazing work, Brad! That's one big job finished. I eased Sonia's burden and listened to them all, and everything is PL OK except for the following three scenes:

3.2: Instead of "Exeunt Lear and Kent" you say "Enter Lear and Kent."

3.6: You omit Kent from "Exeunt Kent, Gloucester and the Fool bearing off Lear."

5.3: More of an optional fix, but you lapse back into the "Ray-guhn" pronunciation a few times. I kind of hear it in 4.5, too, but I let it pass because it was close enough (and said only once). In this scene, however, there is a noticeable alternation between the two pronunciations.

Once those corrections are in, our first role will be complete!

oh, thank you Tomas :9:
but you lapse back into the "Ray-guhn" pronunciation a few times.

 why couldn't Lear call his daughter Mary and save us the hassle ?

great start Brad ! Now we others need to follow your example. I will probably only start over the weekend though.

Okay, those corrections are done. Even the 4-5 one that was mentioned.

I'll take a break from this project for a couple days now. Still trying to decide on voices for the other characters--especially disguised Kent.
I had mentioned awhile back that I was having microphone problems the last couple months. I was replacing the old one because it was literally falling apart, but the new one was distorting my voice no matter what settings I tried. I still don't know what the problem is. It caused me to take a long break from my ongoing solo reading of Dickens' "Old Curiosity Shop," (part of my attempt to do the entire Dickens canon for LibriVox).
What I finally did, out of desperation, was tape my old microphone/headset together! As you've heard from these recordings, it works. But I'm still going to try to find a new one that will work properly before this one gives up for good (the left half, which also includes the microphone, is literally dangling by a wire without the tape!).
Meanwhile, I have "Old Curiosity Shop" two thirds complete, and I think I'd better get some chapters done over the next couple of days. Then I'll come back to Lear.
