An Old-Fashioned Girl by Louisa May Alcott (1832 - 1888)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/an-old-fashioned-girl-dramatic-reading-by-louisa-may-alcott/
When country girl Polly Milton comes to visit her friend Fanny Shaw, city life isn’t all she had hoped it would be. Thrown in the middle of a dysfunctional family, Polly remembers the teachings of her wise mother, and does her best to plant seeds of cheerfulness, honesty, and respect -- and teaching virtue by example.

Four years later, Polly returns to scratch out a living as a music teacher, but finds herself mixed up in much more than piano lessons. Through heartache and love triangles, temptation and tragedy, Polly’s story shows that even the dreams of old-fashioned girls can come true.
All roles will be gender correct, except where noted in the MW (M=Male, F=Female, N=Neutral)
Please read ONLY from the script links in the MW!

  1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two-month deadline.
  2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here:
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (and include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during, and after your recording.
  3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (only for the DPL!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2787
Please read from the Text Links in the Magic Window — scroll down past the character listings!
  5. Please claim roles by section number (the numbers in the first column below).
Please note: All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalog. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Here is the cast list with some brief character descriptions. They are roughly listed in order of most lines to least lines.

*Starting in Chapter 8, all the characters are six years older, so you may want to take that into consideration when reading their lines, especially younger characters like Maud."

Ah, this is going to be great! I think I'd like to play Trix if she's available - I've played nice people in all the previous Alcott books so a change should be fun

I don’t know if multiple claims are allowed, but since they’re all in different chapters, may I claim Jenny Bryant, Kate King, Young Lady, Little Girl, and Alice Lovett? If not I’ll take Maud.

Thank you for the invitation. I would gladly tackle the role of Mr. Shaw if it is still open.

Thank you!

If I could, I'd like to be Mrs. Shaw.

I guess if Tom is claimed, I'll go for Mr. Sydney, instead. :)

Could I put in a claim for Mrs. Milton, Miss Perkins, and Pale Girl?

After some consideration I'd like to try Grandma Shaw - it's a bit of a change for me!

If I read the other posts correctly, it appears that Maud is still up for grabs (Leanne is taking multiple characters INSTEAD of Maud, right?), I would like to take her. If not, I'll look for another part. Very excited to help out on this book!

This is set up.

I gave Twinkle88, Elizabby, and BookAngel7 MW access. Please correct me if I'm wrong. :)
