This may help establish DOWN CAME AN ANGEL as Public Domain, if you are doing a search on that.

Here's a link that shows the tunes were gathered for Cecil Sharp's book in the Appalachians between 1916-1918.

https://www.amazon.com/English-Folk-Son ... 1935243179

The following published book
https://www.amazon.com/English-Folk-Son ... 1935243179
lists Christ was Born in Bethlehem with the link to hear the tune, as traditional. It is the same tune and the words Down Came an Angel.

Thanks! --Susan

Susan, these are two absolutely beautiful recordings! I'm blown away by your voice! Did you compose and perform those beautiful accompaniments yourself? What talent!

I'd love to be able to mark them both PL OK immediately, but there are a couple of things to clear up first.

First, and simplest to fix, the volume on both recordings is a bit high. Your recording of "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" is 97 db, and "Down Came an Angel" is 94.2 db. The LV standard for volume is anything between 86-92 db. If you could de-amplify each and upload them again, that will easily solve that little problem.

The other issue is sources. This can get a bit tricky, because LV must use only clearly PD sources.

I followed the link you gave as the source for "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear", and it goes to a Wikipedia page about the carol. The verses mentioned in the Wikipedia page aren't quite the same as the ones you sang. Do you have the link to the source you actually used for the version you sang? I know that this old carol is PD, as LV has used it in earlier carol collections. But it appears in many many carol books, and each one I've peeked into doesn't quite match your version. It would save me searching further if you could link me directly to the carol book you used.

"Down Came an Angel" is a bit more difficult. The link you gave is to a modern book, still under copyright, for sale on Amazon. It says it is a reprint of a 1932 book by Cecil Sharp. Unfortunately, to be PD for LV, a book must have been published in 1922 or earlier, so a 1932 book is about a decade too recent. I did a search on Cecil Sharp, and found several links on Hathitrust to an earlier volume of his Appalachian Folk-Songs, published in 1918, but that volume doesn't include this song. Hathitrust has a non-viewable listing for the later 1932 volume, but that listing clearly says "This item is not available online ( Limited - search only) due to copyright restrictions." To be able to use this carol, we need to find a published source from 1922 or earlier. Do you know if anyone other than Cecil Sharp collected it earlier? Can you find a link to such a source?

I can't search any more tonight, because I need to get to sleep -- (I'm working both a day job and a night job at the moment, and don't dare stay up too late or I'll never get up in the morning!). But if you can search for those links and put them here, I'll take a look at them tomorrow night when I get home.

Thanks for your kind words.
OK, let's forget about Down Came an Angel. (The music I have for it was from an old book called the NUCS Pocket Songbook No. 2. It came in a boxed set, but I don't have the box, only this one and a volume of spirituals. I don't see it online, and it doesn't have a date. I was drawing my assumption that the work is public domain from the fact that it was reported as being gathered in 1916-18, but didn't realize this song wasn't in the original volume Sharp published. I see it listed in other people's arrangements as "traditional," without other copyright designation, but that's not definitive enough for LV. Sorry to have wasted your time on that one.)

Here is info on Midnight Clear. It Came Upon the Midnight Clear
https://hymnary.org/hymn/UMH/218
https://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh218.sht

I believe I added an “and” before “good will to men.” It was my own adjustment to make it work with the meter (rhythmic framework) I was using. The melody adjustments and changes are my own.

And, yes, all the arranging on the songs, instrumentation etc. is mine, using audio software to record myself multiple times.
I have attempted to upload the file turned down by 6 db. Thanks so much!

CatDuet again here. I am noticing the last part of the last verse wording is different than my links. Here is a link with the wording I sang: ..new heaven and earth shall own the Prince of Peace, their King..."

https://www.lds.org/music/text/hymns/it ... g=eng&_r=1

If this isn't good enough for reference, maybe I could contribute Coventry Carol instead. I will upload it just in case, but if one of the others can work, then that would be better.

I have a song set to the poem Moonless Darkness Stands Between by Gerard Manley Hopkins. It isn't a carol per se, but it is a Christmas poem. That is ready also if it turns out to fit in instead of others that aren't provable as Public Domain. I'm OK with contributing any or none of these. It's up to what is appropriate for the collection.

Thanks for your hard work on this during a busy time of year!

Thank you, Susan, for all the extra work you've done on this! Yes, the new source for "Midnight Clear" will work perfectly, and the volume adjustment puts it right in the sweet spot -- so this one can now be marked PL OK!

Also, thanks for being so understanding about "Down Came an Angel". I really hate to see that one gone, because it was so lovely, but the PD issue was a stumbling block for LV. In its place, I'm happy to accept the "Coventry Carol", which is perfect in every way, and PL OK just as it is.

I love Gerard Manley Hopkins' poetry, though I never knew any of it had been set to music.
