It might be easier than you think. WWI records have been kept pretty much intact. Bairnsfather's service record, I'm certain is preserved, so you could start with his unit and narrow down from there and figure out just who his soldier servant was, unit, service no. etc and trace his service record. He could have wound up MIA, but that didn't happen a whole lot in WWI--at least not on the Western Front. Neat idea.
