LIFE OF ST. ANTHONY by Athanasius of Alexandria (c. 297 - 373).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-life-of-anthony-by-athanasius-of-alexandria-2/

The Life Of St Anthony the Great ( )
  1. Text source (only read from this text!): http://books.google.com/books?id=v38XAAAAYAAJ
  2. Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    Magic Window:

    BC Admin
  3. The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:

    • Say:

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of LIFE OF ST. ANTHONY by Athanasius of Alexandria. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"
    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:

"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.

OK, Your MW is set up.

You'll need to start by logging into the magic window. Instructions are in the BC How-to; and this is a more detailed version of the First Login instructions (with pictures!)

For a solo project, you are the Book Coordinator. That means you fill out the Magic Window and post your links and times in the window when you upload your files. You'll need to start by entering section (or chapter) titles. You can look at the version already in the catalog for how to approach it on this project. See catalog page here: https://librivox.org/the-life-of-anthony-by-athanasius-of-alexandria/

If you have questions, or if you have any trouble with the instructions in the BC how to, please post and we'll work through it together. There is a bit of a learning curve when you do your first solo. You've picked a nice size book - not too long and something that you are interested in, so it should be a manageable and enjoyable process for you.

Great. I've moved us over to "going solo" and I'll go ahead and advertise for a DPL.

I started to PL your first section but stopped. There are a few things which I believe should be addressed first.

Your intro doesn't match the initial post. Part for chapter I was fine with however your stated translator is different. That made me suspect you are using a different text than the link so I opened it to read along and I can't find the starting text you are reading.

Please verify which text you are using.

Hi Linny, sorry it seems the link is a bit confusing. Here is a link to the start of the volume about "Life of St Anthony" within this book

https://books.google.ca/books?id=IYLYAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA195&lpg=PA195&dq=%22You+have+entered+upon+a+noble+rivalry+with+the+monks+of+Egypt%22&source=bl&ots=qh3-go3eXr&sig=cMA-TZUmvqz0x0-RQuoxWvtgHAk&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi68qrz48rWAhWLxlQKHW4RCtEQ6AEITTAJ#v=onepage&q&f=false

The book i is also available here:
http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/2811.htm

This is my first reading on librivox, so if there is something that I should correct please let me know.

Thanks,
linny

The first link was really helpful. Thank you! Good news is that the source you said you would use and the link in the initial post match up. I didn’t realize you were reading a portion of the work. Thank you for clarifying that.

The second link is not in the public domain and should not be used.

The problem I’m still having is the translated source you state is referenced in the table of contents but is not the translator for the overall book. I believe stating that the translation is by Rev. H. Ellershaw is correct and accurate but I believe the book translators for the overall project should be changed. Since you are limiting your reading to a portion of the book maybe the translator for the project should be limited to this portion as well. MaryAnn what do you think?

Your recording intro states:
“Part 1 of the Life of St. Anthony by St. Athanasius. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
"Recording by [your name],
"The LIFE OF ST. ANTHONY, by St. Athanasius. Translated by Rev. H. Ellershaw. Part 1.

I think this is fine however please compare this to section 3 of your initial post. You will find there are minor differences. Please correct your initial post so your PLer has all the correct information. Remember to correct the part for second and all subsequent sections along with the end of recording instructions. Please wait for MaryAnn to provide input to ensure which way to go on the translator.

Now for your PL notes – Please toggle the MW as “See PL Notes”.

PL Notes for section 1:
Assuming that the recorded intro is accepted by MaryAnn your corrections are very minimal. You did a great job!

-Ending silence needs to be extended to 5 seconds. This ensures your recording doesn’t get cut off during playback. You’re a little less than 4 seconds now.
-Your file name is missing _128kb

-Optional: Your volume is within our guidelines and is coming in at 86.2dB. We aim for 89dB with an allowable range of 86-92dB. You may want to consider increasing the volume. Again, you don’t have to but if you chose to you won’t be able to do a straight amplification due to the peaks in your volume. If you are interested, you can use compression and then amplify. Here is a video to guide you though the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fKYYj6HMZU

When you post your revision, please toggle the MW section to “Ready for spot PL”

When you post your links in the MW it would be really helpful if you added some notes. The duration of the file should always go in the notes column however please consider also adding the starting page number for that section. For standard PL we don’t have to follow along with the text but some PLers like to. So, the note for section 2 would be: mm:ss begins on page 198.

I had caught that Ellershaw was the translater and put that into the catalog record behind the scenes. I missed that the intros didn't refer to him as the translator. I don't think the book translators matter here - what matters is who translated the life of Anthony.

I've changed the first post to reflect the correct translator in the intro to the first section and the outro at the end of the book.

Thanks for catching that Linny.
