On Virginity (De Virginitate) by Saint Ambrose (c. 340 - 397). Translated by Albany J. Christie (1817 - 1891)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/on-virginity-de-virginitate-by-saint-ambrose/

One favorite topic of his was the excellence of virginity, and so successful was he in persuading maidens to adopt the religious profession that many a mother refused to permit her daughters to listen to his words. The saint was forced to refute the charge that he was depopulating the empire, by quaintly appealing to the young men as to whether any of them experienced any difficulty in finding wives. He contends, and the experience of ages sustains his contention (De Virg., vii) that the population increases in direct proportion to the esteem in which virginity is held. ( Herbermann, Charles, ed. (1913). "St. Ambrose". Catholic Encyclopedia. New York: Robert Appleton Company.)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/stream/onholyvirginity00ambr#page/n43/mode/2up
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hmm. The page you linked to says, "Revised and edited for New Advent by Kevin Knight. <http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/3407.htm>." So this has been edited from the 1896 version. He also has copyright notices on each web page.

Would you be willing to read from an original scan instead? The same text is here: https://archive.org/stream/aselectlibraryn09wacegoog#page/n388/mode/2up

We'll also need a different summary/intro when it goes to the catalog, as this one is from a copyrighted source.

Ah, the perils of Public Domain! :)

OK, your MW is ready for you. Are you going to have a preface? You have a 00 section, which would be for the preface, but I don't see one in the text. It is an easy fix for me to do, let me know if this is the case. I have made your file name have only one digit, since there will be less than 10 sections. I think it would be best if you wrote the summary in your own words, just so that we can avoid any copyright issues that might pop up. Wikipedia texts have a CC/Share Alike license on them, which means that there is a some sort of restriction somewhere. We need there to be no restrictions at all since we release to the public domain, and that would include the links to newadvent.org, we can't have those on there. Sorry to be a stickler on this.

We will wait here a day or two to see if we can grab a DPL for the project!

I just noticed that Concerning Virgins (De Virginibus, 377 AD) has already been recorded by Euthymius on 2007-02-19; thus, I propose to read On Virginity (De Virginitate, 378 AD). I've updated my original post accordingly.

Can I quote from and link to the 1917 Catholic Encyclopedia article "St. Ambrose"? (See my updated original post.) If not, I can rewrite a description in my own words. thanks

I was wondering, since the project page said De Virginitate initially, not De Virginibus. OK, I will go back and retrieve the MW for the project and change it to what we are doing now.

As I said, Wikipedia/Wikisource slaps a CC/Share alike license, which means that there is a small restriction connected with to the text. That restriction is that anything made from that text can not be sold, and our recordings do end up on ebay and (unfortunately) Audible for sale. If you can adapt your summary from that article, that would be fine. Just say "Adapted from Catholic Encyclopedia (1913) by..." and you can put your forum name or your real name. No links back to the source since it has the CC license.

I changed the link to: https://archive.org/stream/V01CatholicEncyclopediaKOfC#page/n427/mode/2up , which is public domain.

1-20
The files need 5s of silence at the end of each recording, otherwise pl ok. Audacity, in the dropdown menu for "Generate," will create periods of silence of any length.
Nice reads.
