The Night Operator by Frank L Packard (1877 - 1942).

This project is now complete and can be found in our catalog here: https://librivox.org/the-night-operator-by-frank-l-packard/

A collection of ten railroad short stories: "And so these are the stories of the Hill Division and of the men who wrought upon it; the stories of those days when it was young and in the making; the stories of the days when Carleton, 'Royal' Carleton, was superintendent, when gruff, big-hearted, big-paunched Tommy Regan was master mechanic, when the grizzled, gray-streaked Harvey was division engineer, and little Doctor McTurk was the Company surgeon, and Riley was the trainmaster, and Spence was the chief despatcher; the stories of men who have done brave duty and come to honor and glory and their reward—and the stories of some who have gone into Division for the last time on orders from the Great Trainmaster, and who will never railroad any more." ( Frank L. Packard)
  1. Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/files/33634/33634-h/33634-h.htm
  2. Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  3. The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!

"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
"The Night Operator, by Frank L Packard. [Chapter]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of The Night Operator by Frank L Packard. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"
    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Night Operator, by Frank L Packard. "

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.

OK, Your MW is set up.

For a solo project, you are the Book Coordinator. That means you fill out the Magic Window and post your links and times in the window when you upload your files. You'll need to start by entering section (or chapter) titles. I've added the first two to get you started, but I'm sure you've seen enough of our projects to know how to structure those. The system adds the section number to the beginning of whatever you type in the MW.

You'll need to start by logging into the magic window. Instructions are in the BC How-to; and this is a more detailed version of the First Login instructions (with pictures!) Please be sure to read all of the BC How To document, as that will give you more information on your role as a BC.

If you have questions, or if you have any trouble with the instructions in the BC how to, please post and we'll work through it together. There is a bit of a learning curve when you do your first solo. You've picked a nice size book, so it should be a manageable and enjoyable process for you.

Some of the chapters run as long as about 50 minutes. Should I record each chapter in one file?

Single recordings can be up to 75 minutes, so there is no problem leaving them as one file.

That said, some listeners (and readers) prefer shorter files. So there is no problem splitting them if you would like to.

Great Delmar!

Go ahead and post the link to the MW, note the time there and change the status to "ready for PL".

I'll put up an advert for a DPL on the Listeners Wanted thread.

Max,
I'm working on my upload folder, and so was able to check this. Here is what I see:
sftp://mc@librivox.org/uploads/maryannspiegel/nightoperator_01_packard_128kb.mp3

which becomes: https://librivox.org/uploads/maryannspiegel/nightoperator_01_packard_128kb.mp3

and that one works, so I've updated the link in the MW.

Delmar,

Please put the time in the "notes" column of the MW. You can see how I have done it for chapter 1. The only thing that goes in the "listen URL" column is the link you get from the uploader.

Thanks!

Section 1 PL Notes

@ the end there are only 5 seconds of silence, needs to be 10 seconds as the file is over 30 minutes long.

Also the sound seems very low, I had to turn up my volume to listen, which is unusual. Perhaps you could record a bit louder?

I'm glad I caught this project, I really enjoy the old railroad stories!

Max,

We've had a change of thought on the ending silences. It's now OK to do 5 seconds for all files, no matter how long. That said, if people use 10 seconds, we're not telling them to shorten it.

The first post instructions still say 10 seconds because it's coded that way, and I don't often remember to manually edit it when I'm setting up a new project. So sorry if I've created any confusion on this point.
