The Windhover by Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844 - 1889).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-windhover-by-gerard-manley-hopkins/
"Windhover" is another name for the common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus). The name refers to the bird's ability to hover in midair while hunting prey. In the poem, the narrator admires the bird as it hovers in the air, suggesting that it controls the wind as a man may control a horse. The bird then suddenly swoops downwards and "rebuffed the big wind". The bird can be viewed as a metaphor for Christ or of divine epiphany.

Hopkins called "The Windhover" "the best thing [he] ever wrote". It commonly appears in anthologies and has lent itself to many interpretations. ( Wikipedia)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!

The Windhover by Gerard Manley Hopkins, read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal url.]
Then read the poem:
To Christ our Lord_

I CAUGHT this morning morning's minion, king-
dom of daylight's dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Fal-
con, in his riding
Of the rolling level underneath him steady air, and
striding
High there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing
In his ecstacy! then off, off forth on swing,
As a skate's heel sweeps smooth on a bow-bend:
the hurl and gliding
Rebuffed the big wind. My heart in hiding
Stirred for a bird,—the achieve of, the mastery of the
thing!

Brute beauty and valour and act, oh, air, pride, plume, here
Buckle! AND the fire that breaks from thee then, a
billion
Times told lovelier, more dangerous, O my chevalier!

No wonder of it: shéer plód makes plough down
sillion
Shine, and blue-bleak embers, ah my dear,
Fall, gall themselves, and gash gold-vermillion.

At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.

Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.

Hi, here is my attempt.

https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/windhover_hopkins_kb_128kb.mp3 1:27

I'm new here and new to using audacity so I hope it isn't too bad, I tried to fix some of the issues it had. This was a tough, but interesting, poem.

Thank you Anne and Kyo.

Good first reading Kyo, just a couple of comments...
- the volume is too low at 80.9 dB. You should aim for your wave forms to peak near the 0.5 mark, like this:
Image
- with amplifying, the noise level of 45 dB will rise, so a Noise Reduction pass would be helpful.
Let me know if you need help with your settings.
* Please let me know under what name would you like to appear in the LV catalog and if you have one, we can put your personal URL link on your catalog page too.

Oh o.k., actually my recording was originally louder but I was afraid it was too loud so I started messing around with the effects on audacity but I did wonder if it was too quiet. I still have the original so I'll go and fix the volume just a little on that and submit it and maybe that one will have a better sound. Thank you.

Kyo, at some point, there is a plugin called ReplayGain that you can install in Audacity and it will get you to exactly the right dB in one move. It is so great for Librivox work!

Here is one at 1:29
https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/windhover_hopkins_sws_128kb.mp3

My voice is still a little foggy (allergies) but at least the croaking went away after drinking a bucket of water. Maybe it's an improvement anyway.
This is a nice poem and fun to say the words.
