Hope by Emily Brontë (1818 - 1848).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/hope-by-emily-bronte/
Emily Jane Brontë was an English novelist and poet who is best known for her only novel, Wuthering Heights, now considered a classic of English literature. Emily was the third eldest of the four surviving Brontë siblings, between the youngest Anne and her brother Branwell. She wrote under the pen name Ellis Bell. ( Wikipedia )
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!

No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
Hope by Emily Brontë, read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal url.]
Then read the poem:

Hope Was but a timid friend;
She sat without the grated den,
Watching how my fate would tend,
Even as selfish-hearted men.

She was cruel in her fear;
Through the bars one dreary day,
I looked out to see her there,
And she turned her face away!

Like a false guard, false watch keeping,
Still, in strife, she whispered peace;
She would sing while I was weeping;
If I listened, she would cease.

False she was, and unrelenting;
When my last joys strewed the ground,
Even Sorrow saw, repenting,
Those sad relics scattered round;

Hope, whose whisper would have given
Balm to all my frenzied pain,
Stretched her wings, and soared to heaven,
Went, and ne'er returned again!

At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.

Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.
Save your recording as an mp3 file using the following filename and ID3 tag format:

I couldn't find the umlaut on my machine. Partially sighted.

Here's mine at 1:24. I had to remove the umlaut over Bronte's name in order
to get my file to upload. I kept receiving a 'null' message before doing that. :?

Thank you Tony, Lee Ann and Matthew. :thumbs:

Sorry about the umlaut, that shouldn't have been in the filename. :roll:

Welcome Katie. :D

Good first reading, just a few comments on your file...
- filename should be all lowercase
- the volume is too low at 76.2 dB, we aim for 89 dB, you should aim for your wave forms to peak near the 0.5 mark, like this:
Image
You can check your own volume you can use our Checker program - see info at http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker Make sure you download the experimental version - you will find the volume in decibels on the Information tab
- there is a high background noise level that gets louder when you amplify
- your file has a DC offset of +27, thsi is easily lowered with Audacity's Effects / Normalize.

If you need help with any of those items. please ask. :wink:

*Please let me know under what name would you like to appear in the LV catalog and if you have one, we can put your personal URL link on your catalog page too.
You can view your brand new LV Catalog page by clicking your forum name in the Magic Window.

Hi David,

I'm using a head set. I adjusted it further away from my mouth because I felt like it would distort the sound when my breath was too loud, especially saying any word that started with F. It sounded like I wind on the recording. This lowered the overall level. I was in a phone booth so I'm not sure why there is background noise. Could both these problems be an issue with the headset?

You can use kenw for my name.

Thanks for the feedback,
Katie

Katie,
Sometimes background noise is caused by the computer itself, if you are using Audacity, the file is easily amplified and Noise Reduction used to clean up the background noise. I've amplified your file and run a Noise Reduction pass, please tell me what you think.
https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/hope_bronte_kn_128kb.mp3

Checker results:
Volume - 88.8 dB
DC Bias - +0 (-0.0001%)
Background Noise - 36.5 dB

You could try to position the mic so it is not directly in front of your mouth.

Just checking - you want your catalog name kenw ?

Hi Aradlaw,
I did upload my audio and then found my forum account was not activated. Sorry about that. Here we go:

First time posting here, let me know if the audio needs adjusting.
